Nathan Patrick Gottschalk, 53, of Ottumwa died October 19, 2024 at his home.

He was born August 20, 1971 in Ottumwa to Dale F. and Joann Delores Coppinger Gottschalk. He married Katy Jean Owens Amos June 14, 2003.

Nate graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1990, where he participated in the marching band, played football and ran track. Growing up, he worked at the family business, Kentucky Fried Chicken. He lived in Iowa City for a short time and for 9 years in Colorado, where he was a white water rafting guide on the Colorado River and worked as a chef for State Bridge Lodge. Returning to Ottumwa in 1998, he worked with his parents at Kentucky Fried Chicken and managed the restaurant. In 2007 he opened Quiznos restaurant, which he has owned and operated for the past 17 years.

Nate enjoyed live music concerts, was a Paul Simon fan, enjoyed spending time at the Lake of the Ozarks and going on “toots” adventures with his wife. He enjoyed helping with Ottumwa Octoberfest and had been a Chili Cookoff Champion. As a food aficionado, he taught his sons how to cook, but really loved corndogs. He was funny, caring, hardworking, slightly onery, and generous to the people he loved.
