Virginia M. Gardner, 88, of Ottumwa, died October 25, 2024 at her residence.
She was born February 19, 1936 in Cherokee, IA to William P. and Iva Miller McWilliams. She married Gene A. Gardner March 9, 1957 in Aberdeen, MD and he preceded her in death July 22, 2011.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School, Ginny attended the University of Iowa for 3 years. She had worked for Lee’s Photograph and for Dr. Ameln as an office assistant.
Ginny was an avid reader and supporter of the arts. She was involved in various community activities including as a member of St. Mary of the Visitation, PEO Chapter HR, Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, New Century Book Club, Irving Club and the St. Mary of the Visitation Auxiliary. She had served on the Horace Mann PTA, Washington Junior High PTA and the American Home Finding Board.
Surviving are her children, Jennifer (Keith) Smith of Warrenton, MO and Greg Gardner of Venice FL; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Gardner of Ottumwa; 7 grandchildren, Danielle (Chris) Rothgeb, Adam (Hilary) Smith, Lindsay (Chad) Carlson, Corbin Gardner, Jacob Gardner, Grant (Shannon) Gardner and Tayna (Serguei) Gardner; 5 great grandchildren; two sisters, Jane Carr of Solon and Jean (Mike) Couch of San Francisco, CA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Steven Gardner; a brother, Mike McWilliams; daughter-in-law, Linda Gardner; and brother-in-law, Frank Carr.
Her body has been cremated. Visitation with her family present to greet friends will be 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 29th at Reece Funeral Home.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 29th at St. Mary of the Visitation. Inurnment will follow in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
