It is with great sorrow and profound respect that we announce the passing of Wayne Gilbert, on December 17, 2024 at the Ottumwa Regional Hospital, a man of remarkable intellect, undeniable talent, and boundless ambition, yet whose heart remained as warm and comforting as the summer sun. Born on August 4th, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, Wayne was a beacon of light and a source of inspiration to all who knew him, leaving an indelible mark on the community of Ottumwa, Iowa, where he resided.

Wayne was not just a tool and dye maker by profession, he was a craftsman in the truest sense of the word, imbuing every piece he touched with a hint of his personality. He belonged to the Wood Carver’s Club of Ottumwa. His love for his craft was only surpassed by his love for his life partner, Judith Miller, with whom he was set to celebrate 42 beautiful years this upcoming Valentine’s Day. Wayne’s love for animals was renowned, especially his dedication towards dog training, which he passionately pursued at Indian Hill Community College for over 15 years. An avid hunter in his younger days, Wayne later devoted himself to teaching English as a second language at the Ottumwa Public Library, touching countless lives with his compassionate spirit and fierce intelligence. Despite his wide array of interests and accomplishments, what mattered most to him were Judith, his dogs, and his friends in West Virginia.

Wayne’s life was a symphony of love, dedication, and achievement, a melody that will echo in the hearts of those who loved him for years to come. His undying love for Judith, his dedication to his craft, his passion for teaching, and his heartfelt affection for his dogs and friends are the chords that will continue to reverberate, reminding us of the extraordinary man that was Wayne Gilbert.

Wayne is survived by his life partner, Judith Miller of Ottumwa, and neighbors and friends.

Wayne has been cremated per his wishes. Memorials may be directed to Judith Miller, mailed to PO Box 1607, Ottumwa, Iowa 52501 in Wayne’s name. Sinnott Funeral Home in Ottumwa is assisting the family with arrangements.

We invite you to share your memories of Wayne and upload photos that capture his spirit and celebrate his life on his memorial page. Your stories and photos will serve as a tribute to his remarkable journey, keeping his memory alive in our hearts.
