On April 5, 2025, Sue Ann Schaer, born on August 18, 1957 in Chicago, IL, peacefully departed from this world.

An adored mother, grandmother, and friend, Sue’s spirited and compassionate personality brightened the lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing her. A long term resident of Bloomfield, Iowa for 49 years, Sue’s heart was deeply ingrained in her community. Her infectious laughter and thoughtful nature made her a beacon of love and kindness. Sue was a woman of strong faith, her life was a living testament to the verse, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31). Her love for others was truly exceptional. Sue found great joy in simple pleasures: riding horses, playing with her beloved dogs, indulging in scary movies, and most importantly, spending precious time with her children and grandchildren.

The strong bonds she formed with her family and her horse Mini, were a testament to her loving nature. Sue leaves behind a rich legacy of love and commitment, survived by her children, Esther DeRuiter and Brian Schaer, her son-in-law Craig DeRuiter, her cherished boyfriend Mike Lanman, and her grandsons: Kinnick Sackman, Colton Sackman, Marcus Schaer, Nicolas Schaer, and Braedyn Schaer. She is also survived by her ex-husband, Don Schaer. Sue is preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Mildred Holycross.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, April 11, 2025 at the Christ Church, 12627 River Rd, Ottumwa, Iowa 52501 with Pastor Dan Smith officiating. Sue’s life was a celebration of love, compassion, and spirit. Her memory will forever be engraved in the hearts of those she touched. We invite you to share your memories, stories, and photos of Sue on the memorial page. In this way, we can collectively remember and cherish the joy she brought into our lives.
