James Marshall Box, 79 of Ottumwa passed away at 7:42 a.m. April 22, 2025 at his home.
He was born March 16, 1946 in Ottumwa to Herbert F. and Esther Marie Nylen Box.
Growing up in Ottumwa, Jim was a 1964 graduate of Ottumwa High School where he met the love of his life, Susan Patricia Horne and they were married on May 31, 1966. Jim went on to graduate from the American Institute of Business, Simpson College and Drake University Law School. He practiced law in Ottumwa first with his father, Herbert, and later with his daughter, Cynthia. His legal career spanned 52 years serving the people of southeast Iowa. Jim also worked on the farm during the summers.
Jim belonged to many organizations during his lifetime including Rotary Club of Ottumwa, Wapello County Conservation Board, Iowa Bar Association, Wapello County Bar Association, the Judicial Nominating Committee and the Arbor Day Foundation. Jim was also a supporter of Wapello County 4-H.
If you knew Jim well, you know he had a passion for the outdoors and a zest for travel. He welcomed any opportunity to tell tales of his adventures and wow, did he have some wild ones to tell! He had 3 loves in his life: his family, hunting, and his beloved cat. Jim was a devoted husband and cherished father and grandfather who will be greatly missed.
Surviving is his wife of 58 years, Susan P. Box; daughter, Angella (Paul A.) Cartwright and their children, Paul J. and Marissa; daughter, Cynthia (Mickey Jr.) Hucks and their children, Madaline, Marshall (Sandy) and Jackson; and sister, Betty Chapman of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Melissa Michelle Box; and brother, Robert Box.
Visitation will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, April 28th at Reece Funeral Home. The family will be present to greet friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday prior to the service.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 29th at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in
Shaul Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made to the Wapello County 4-H Foundation to establish a scholarship in Jim’s honor that will be used to support the education and development of future generations.
