DALE W. SMITH
OTTUMWA-Dale William Smith, 83, of 412 S. Ferry St., died at 10:35 p.m. January 22, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
He was born June 27, 1933 in Fairfield to William Arthur and Anna Margaret Gohn Smith. He married Sharon Hawkins on November 22, 1952.
Dale was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years, retiring as the Scottsbluff, NE postmaster in 1989. He then managed the Super 8 Motel in Ottumwa for 9 years, retiring in 1998.
He attended First Pentecostal Assembly of God.
Dale served on the board of River Community Credit Union and on the board of the First Church of the Open Bible. He was a member of the Kiwanis in Fairfield and Scottsbluff, NE.
Surviving is his wife, Sharon; his children, Marcia (Mike) Ernst of Branson, MO, Joleen (R.G.) Scott of Mt. Pleasant, Julie (Ron) Callas of Ottumwa, Becky (Jim) Adam of Fairfield, Jill (Brent) Kilthau of Scottsbluff, NE and Chris (Tricia) Smith of Ottumwa; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Flossie Pearson of Waldport, OR, Pauline Nord of Centerville, Velma Schniepp of Decatur, IL and Patty DeBoef of What Cheer; and good friend Finis Foust.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Ruth Smith, Margie Weston, Florence Peterson and Dorothy Morrison.
Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday at First Pentecostal Assembly of God with Pastor Richard Schlotter and Pastor John DeBoef officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials may be made to First Pentecostal Assembly of God or Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa for the Memory Unit.
