OTTUMWA-Gregory Steven O’Brien, 60, of Ottumwa, died at 7:55 p.m. August 30, 2017 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born November 22, 1956 to Daniel George and Nancy Rae Nevins O’Brien. He married Cynthia Jean Garrett on June 5, 1976.
A 1976 graduate of Ottumwa High School, he graduated from Indian Hills Community College and from Worsham College of Mortuary Science. He had worked at Hormel from 1977 until the plant closed in 1987. He was a licensed funeral director and a volunteer for the Wapello County Sheriff Reserves. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League.
Greg was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan. He enjoyed his kid’s baseball, coaching them in basketball and youth wrestling. He enjoyed motorcycles and spending time with family especially his grandchildren.
Surviving is his wife, Cindy; two sons, Erik (Sarah) O’Brien and Aaron (Kortny) O’Brien both of Ottumwa; 4 grandchildren, Laney, Khloe, Beckham and Presley; two brothers, Andy (Kelly) O’Brien of Ottumwa and Perry (Sandy) O’Brien of North Liberty; 12 nieces and nephews and his father-in-law, James Garrett.
He was preceded in death by his parents and mother-in-law, Betty Garrett.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 2 p.m. Friday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.
Memorials may be made to the Wapello County Sheriff Reserves or to the family for his grandchildren’s education.
