Daniel Boos

Daniel Leon Boos, 73, of Agency, died at 7:20 a.m. May 25, 2018 at his home.

He was born November 1, 1944 in Ottumwa to Chester and Natalie Hyde McKim.  His parents divorced and Dan was adopted by Roger Boos in 1951.   He married Doris Jean Newland on October 11, 1968 at the First Lutheran Church in Ottumwa.

A 1963 graduate of Cardinal Community High School, he attended the Iowa Success School in Ottumwa.  He lived in the Agency area all of his life.  Dan enlisted in the Army Reserves Ottumwa unit and served from 1965-1971.

He had been employed by John Morrell & Co., Loudens in Fairfield and then worked at Black’s Tire Co. in Ottumwa for 35 years, retiring in 2006.

Dan was a long time member of the Agency United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher (1972), a choir member (1972) and  a member of United Methodist Men (1994).  He was also active in the Ecumenical Lord’s Cupboard, a 45 year member of Agency Lions Club serving as secretary for the past 40 years.  Dan served on the Chief Wapello Park Committee and was a former member of I.O.O.F. Magnolia Lodge #24.  He had also been a city council member for several terms.

Dan loved the outdoors, working in his garden and was happiest on his John Deere riding mower.

Surviving are his wife, Doris; a son, Jason (Tonya) Boos of Runnells; grandchildren, Jaisa Lynn Boos, Jacobe Edward Boos, Jeremy Newland, Alex Newland, Zach Newland, Megan Newland, Taylor Hartwig; daughter-in-law, Linae Hartwig; a brother, Thomas (Jerie) Boos of Agency; his uncle, Merle (Gladys) Boos of West Bend, WI; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and loyal companion, Sophie.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Agency United Methodist Church with Rev. Kelly Peavey officiating.   Burial will be in the Batavia Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Courageous.

Charles Heston

Charles V. (Bud) Heston, 87, of rural Stockport, Iowa passed away on May 26, 2018 at his home. He was born on November 3, 1930 to Floyd Heston and Mary Doze Heston Poole in Stockport, Iowa. He graduated from Stockport High School in 1949. He married Ruth Holmes on December 4, 1955 in Donnelson, Iowa. Together, Bud and Ruth raised four children, Kimberly, Monty, Roxann and Charlie on the family farm just outside of Stockport.

Bud was in the United States Army, drafted in 1952, serving in the Korean War. After his honorable discharge in 1953, Bud returned to Van Buren County and was a farmer and land contractor. He loved farming and was an excellent steward of the land. He was a member of the Elvin E. Cecil Post No. 147 American Legion of Stockport, Iowa. Bud was also a past member of the Cattleman’s Association, Van Buren County Fair Board and the Land Improvement Contractor’s Association. He especially loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; four children, Kimberly (Steve) Keller of Fairfield, Iowa, Monty (Shawn) Heston of Birmingham, Iowa, Roxann Heston of Stockport, Iowa, Charlie (Krista) Heston of Fairfield, Iowa; six grandchildren, Chelsey Blum, Megan Hines, Hanna Keller, Kaytlin Moeller, Shelby Heston, Tyler Heston; four step-grandchildren, Elizabeth Hinkle, Thomas Barta, Cathleen Waddle, Nathan Barta; four great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Hines, Addison Blum, Sawyer Blum, Paisley Blum; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Julia Anderson; a brother, Jack Heston; and a half-brother, Roger Heston.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 1, 2018 at Pedrick Funeral Home – Keosauqua with Pastor Danny Cary officiating. Burial with military rites will follow the service at Spencer Cemetery in rural Stockport, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 5 -8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2018. Memorial contributions in Bud’s honor may be made to the Elvin E. Patricia Joan Heminger

Patricia Joan (White) Heminger, 88, passed away peacefully during the early morning hours of Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Keosauqua Health Care Center in Keosauqua, IA. Joan was born on May 30, 1930 in Harrisburg, IA to Helen Carita (McComb) White and Rollo Hubert White. She grew up in Bonaparte and graduated from Bonaparte High School in 1948. Joan married Donald Rex Heminger in December 1950.

Joan was full of life and was always happy to be around people. She enjoyed spending time with her family and sharing countless stories of her childhood memories with her family and friends. In her early years, she had a big garden and enjoyed snapping beans and canning. She also enjoyed being outdoors and watching Western Movies. She was always very interested in researching and talking about Genealogy, learning about history and looking at old pictures. In her recent years, she loved attending church at the nursing home and enjoyed singing along to gospel songs. Joan was retired from Sheaffer Pen Company, where she worked for more than twenty years. She was especially proud of her children and the fact that she had raised them alone after the death of her husband, Donald Rex Heminger who passed away on August 21, 1965.

Joan is survived by six daughters, Cheryl Folker of Farmington IA, Carita Crank of Bentonsport, IA, Jennifer Topping of LaHarpe, IL, Crysta Hughes of Paducah, KY, Nancy Eastin of Croton, IA, Mary Rowley of Summit Point, WV; one sister, Anita King of O’Fallon, MO; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great grandson, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Rex Heminger; her son, Ronald Rex Heminger; parents, Rollo Hubert White and Helen Carita (McComb) White; one sister, Janet Ilene (White) Pratt; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua with Pastor Phil Campbell officiating. Visitation will be on Monday, June 4, 2018 with family present to greet friends from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua. Wendy Courtney

Wendy LeAnn Courtney, 41, of Eldon, died May 26, 2018 as the result of an auto accident in Jefferson County.

She was born June 10, 1976 in Ottumwa to Leonard Oren and Margaret Alvina “Marge” Dawson Courtney.  She married Dave Mefford and they later divorced.

Wendy was a high school graduate from Novinger, MO where she played baseball and softball. She attended Indian Hills Community College and Truman State University.

Wendy drove a tilt bed for her father in Courtney Car Crushing.  She was a wonderful waitress and loved serving people and was presently employed at Southfork in Bloomfield.

Wendy attended People’s Church in Batavia.  She was a rock hunter and rock collector, enjoying God’s beauty.  She found joy in gifting everyone in her life with Disciple’s Cross necklaces.

Surviving are her 4 sons, Drake, Dalton, Devon and Dylan Mefford; step-children, Brooke, Beth, Brock Hamilton and Hillary Gunnels; her mother, Marge Courtney of Eldon; her father, Leonard (Peggy) Courtney of Ottumwa; grandmother, Helen Dawson of Unionville, MO;  3 siblings, Leon Courtney, Brandi Luke and David Johnson all of Ottumwa.

She was preceded in death by grandparents, George and Jeanette Courtney and Bob Dawson.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Jack Jackson officiating.

Burial will be in Eldon Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials may be made to the family to benefit her sons.

Orrin McCarty III

Orrin Wayne “J.R.” McCarty III, 34, of Agency, died at 4:21 p.m. May 26, 2018 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

He was born February 28, 1984 in Iowa City to Orrin Wayne Jr. and Rae Anne Tozier McCarty.

A 2002 graduate of Ottumwa High School, J.R. had attended Indian Hills Community College.  He had worked for several years for C&W Services at Cargill in Eddyville.

Jr’s main passion in life was music. He attended countless concerts and meet and greets with his favorite artists. He was a huge supporter of local music and enjoyed not only the music, but also helping behind the scenes…in particular his brother-in -law’s band.

He loved riding his motorcycle, kayaking, walking trails, fishing and was an avid reader. He was also an amazing cook and enjoyed experimenting in the kitchen and working his magic while perfecting recipes. Jr was also very creative putting his heart and soul into his projects, which he loved sharing with others. He was especially proud of his carved pumpkin creations, firework displays that he built and music videos that he created for his brother in law’s band compiled from their live performances.
Surviving is his mother, Rae Anne (Richard) Hem of Agency; sisters, Wanda (Josh) Baker of Ottumwa and Rebecca (Don) Thomason of Batavia; nieces and nephews, Brendan Cox, Ethan, Seth, Chloe, Bella, Isaac and Gwynneth Baker, Natalee  and Cody Thomason; grandfather, Orrin Wayne McCarty of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his father, Orrin Wayne McCarty Jr.

His body has been cremated.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastors Harold Baker and Tom Shipley officiating.  Inurnment will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Donna Rowe

Donna Jean Rowe, 76, of rural Ottumwa, died at 8:40 a.m. June 2, 2018 at her home.

She was born Sepember 4, 1941 in Ottumwa to Art and Lucille Vinyard Burtis.  She married Jim Collins and they later divorced.  She married Richard Rowe on July 15, 1970 in Lancaster, MO.

Growing up in Ottumwa, Donna lived in California for several years before moving back to Ottumwa.  She worked for Lund International for over 20 years and for Norris Asphalt from where she retired.

She was a member of South Side Four Square Gospel Church.  She loved riding her Harley and was an associate member of Second Chance Motorcycle Club.  She enjoyed visiting the casino with her husband and traveling, especially to Mississippi.  Most importantly she loved spending time with her kids and grandkids.

Surviving is her husband Richard; 6 children, Jim (Carrie) Collins of Pekin, IL, Bobbi (Dennis) Daugherty of Clearfield, IA, Artie Byars of Ottumwa, John (Kelly) Collins of Richfield, IN, Terry (Dana King) Rowe of Ottumwa and Tiffiney Rowe of Ottumwa; 2 step-daughters, Donna Jean of Centerville and Brenda Rice of Ottumwa; 23 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Ted Burtis of Cape Coral, FL and Tony Burtis of Illinois; a sister, Sally Kirby of California; and her dog, Missy.

She was preceded in death by 6 siblings, Roscoe Clark, Ralph Clark, Jerry Clark, Bob Burtis, Olive Clark and Jackie Clark; her parents and a step-father, Bob Leedom.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastors Scott and Beth Cecil officiating.  Cremation will follow the service.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heartland Humane Society.

John Hathaway

John Samuel “Sam” Hathaway, 86, of rural Ottumwa passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family  at 10:45 a.m. Sunday June 3, 2018.

He was born April 21, 1932 in Burlington to John Lewman and Irene Elizabeth Bates Hathaway.  The family moved to Davenport and then to West Des Moines.

Sam graduated from Valley West High School in 1950 and attended Iowa State University. He served in the U.S. Navy  during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1955.  He served in San Diego, CA with a tour of duty to Japan and Korea, where he served as an electronics technician aboard the USS El Dorado.

He married Nora Kathleen Gurr in 1954 and they later divorced.  He then married Kathleen Beach in 1965 and they later divorced.

Sam worked for General Electric in San Diego, CA; when he returned to Iowa in 1960, he worked for Rockwell-Collins in Cedar Rapids; Dr. James Van Allen at the University of Iowa; and the Rock Island Arsenal, from 1967 to his retirement in 1997.

Sam loved the outdoors, especially fishing.  Growing up, the family spent many summers at Nine Mile Lake in northern Minnesota.  He spent many happy hours fishing for Walleye in Lake Vermilion, MN with Pastor Giddings.  He passed on his love of the outdoors and fishing to his sons.  He also loved to cook and watching cooking shows.

Surviving are his children Laura Jean  Elledge of Oklahoma City, OK, Lee Ann (Bob) Glade of Batavia, Jonathan (Carol) Hathaway of Boone, Sam (Michelle) Hathaway of Des Moines, Michael Hathaway of Des Moines,  Gabriel Hathaway of Elkhart,  Elizabeth Hathaway of Pleasant Valley;  grandchildren, Rebecca, Laurie, Sarah, Hope, Rachel, Coltin, Kiley, Anna, Jessica, Grace and Noah;  great-grandchildren, Skylar, Alex, Carly, Allen, Ajia, Anyia, Isaac, Michael, and Faith; a brother, Mike (Dee) Hathaway of Chillicothe, OH and his beloved cat, Tommy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant grandson, Hunter Jon Hathaway and son-in-law, Slim Elledge.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Friday with the family present one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to the Institution for Creation Research.

Sara Bergmeier

Sara Jane Bergmeier, 60, of 113 N. Ann,  died at 7:05 P.M. June 4, 2018 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

She was born February 14, 1958 in Ottumwa to Edward and Nancy Lee Teasdale Swope.  She married Kenneth L. Bergmeier on November 21, 1986.

A 1976 graduate of Hedrick High School, Sara was a domestic engineer.  She was past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #114 Auxiliary and a member of the Ottumwa Women’s Bowling Association.

Surviving is her husband, Kenneth; their 2 dogs, Max and Annie; 2 brothers, Bradley Swope and Richard (Jessi) Swope both of Ottumwa.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Her body has been cremated.

A time for friends to greet family will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Heartland Humane Society or Hospice Serving Davis & Wapello Counties.

Patricia Vandello

Patricia Ann Vandello, 93, of Ottumwa, died June 4, 2018 at Vista Woods Care Center.

She was born February 5, 1925 in Ottumwa to Henry and Molly Morrison Blubaugh.  She married James E. Vandello on December 14, 1942 in Kirksville, MO and he preceded her in death on June 26, 2008.

Pat was a graduate of Ottumwa Heights Academy, and had been a bookkeeper for Max Furniture.

She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of the Americas.  Pat enjoyed quilting.

Surviving are her children, Laura (Stan) Shaw of Omaha, NE, Margaret  Stribling of Eldon, Monica (Greg) Malott of New London, James “Pat” (Carol) Vandello of Denver, CO and Tom (Alice) Vandello of Ottumwa; grandchildren; Molly (Dennis) Callas, Michael (Lisa) Akers, Mary (Matt) Abels, Patricia (Tom) Dunn, Catherine (Joel) Brunkhorst, Stanley (Amy) Shaw Jr., Elizabeth Vandello, Abbie (Stan) Shaw, Margie (Aaron) Stone, Jennifer (Dennis) Rysdam, Nathan (Lara) Vandello, Danny  Vandello, Joshua Malott,  Joe (Lisa) Malott, Elizabeth (Aaron Curry) Malott; 37 great-grandchildren;

She was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Frank Akers; a grandson, David Frank Akers; 2 great-grandsons, Dawson Thomas Vandello and Lucas James Vandello; a brother, James Blubaugh; sisters, Margaret Snook and Mary Jameson; son-in-law, Troy Huffman.

Funeral Mass will be 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Patrick Hilgendorf presiding.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home.  The Rosary will be recited and a Christian Wake will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday followed by family visitation until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Kathryn Heckart

Kathryn M. Heckart, 67, of Ottumwa, died at 2:05 p.m. June 4, 2018 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

She was born November 19, 1950 in Ottumwa to Charles T. and  Irene Benge O’Brien.  Kathy married Robert Heckart on November 29, 1969.

A 1968 graduate of Ottumwa High School, she had attended Ottumwa Heights College.

Kathy enjoyed square dancing with her husband and also enjoyed traveling, embroidery and crocheting.

Surviving are her husband, Bob; her children, Will (Kelly) Heckart, Lisa (Darrin) Wood and Scott (Amber) Heckart all of Ottumwa; 5 grandchildren, Levi Wood, Trevor Baker, Justin Wood, Hannah Heckart, Henley Heckart; a sister, Patricia (Ron) Tallman of Wyoming, IA;  her mother-in-law, Ernestine Heckart of Ottumwa and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Delayne Adamson; a nephew, John Kosman and her father-in-law, Marlin Heckart.

Her body has been cremated.

A time for friends to greet family will be held Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice serving Davis and Wapello Counties or to the family to be designated at a later date.

Coy McClellan

Coy C. McClellan, 92, of East Moline,  IL, formerly of Ottumwa, died June 3, 2018 in Rock Island, IL.

He was born December 22, 1925 in Osceola, IA to Otha and Veta Cain McClellan.  He married Marylan Boekhoff  on February 26, 1948.  She preceded him in death March 25, 2005.

He proudly and honorably served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.  He retired from John Morrell & Co. after working for 39 years.

He was a member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and was a Union Steward while working at John Morrell & Co.  He loved to go camping, traveling, dancing, playing bingo, was outgoing and loved people.  He especially loved spending time with his family and always put them first.

Surviving are two daughters, Candice (Dennis) Eakins of Coal Valley, IL and Linda Preston of Des Moines; 3 grandchildren, Crystal (Caroline) Eakins, Justin (Diane) Preston and Lisa King; 6 great grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Bill (Jo) McClellan of Callao, MO; a brother-in-law, Ralph Johnson of Ottumwa; and 5 nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Joy McClellan Johnson.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor David Albert officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military honors performed by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Thursday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Association.

Mary A. Sellwood, 84, of Ottumwa, died June 6, 2018 at Ridgewood Specialty Care in Ottumwa.

She was born July 22, 1933 in North Platte, NE to Clifford and Ava May Hartline Anderson.  She married Maley Sellwood on December 23, 1967 and he preceded her in death on January 6, 2010.

Mary had worked at St. Joseph Hospital and worked for 20 years at the Canteen.  She loved crocheting, reading and fishing.

Surviving are her sons, Donald (Danielle) Craft Jr. of Cheyenne, WY, and Alfred Craft (Sheena Lipp) of Ottumwa; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul (Pat) Anderson of Ottumwa and a sister, Rose Schelker of Albia.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie  Miller; a son, Byron Craft Sr.; 2 grandchildren; 2 infant brothers, Charles and Clifford Anderson; 2 sisters, Sarah Spilman and infant Nancy Anderson.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Marthana Newland officiating.  Burial will be in Chisman Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Friday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Martha Marker

Martha Elizabeth Carter Marker, 76, of Ottumwa, IA passed away Friday, June 8, 2018 in Ottumwa under the care of Hospice of Davis and Wapello County.  Funeral services will be held beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at the Eldon United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  Memorial contributions in Martha’s honor may be directed to the Eldon United Methodist Church or Hospice of Davis and Wapello County. Martha Elizabeth Carter Marker was born January 26, 1942 in Ottumwa, IA to Clyde and Doris McMickle Carter.    She attended school in Eldon, IA and on July 23, 1961 she married Loren Marker. The two later divorced, but during their time together they became the proud parents to three children; Bryan, Michele, and Melinda.  Martha worked hard as a mother and helped to support her family by working as an office manager. She was employed at Des Moines Blueprint and Beeline and Blue where she managed day to day office operations. She retired after 32 years of dedicated service.  After retirement her love for family brought her home to Ottumwa. She worked at the Ottumwa Hy-Vee for eight years until her health would no longer allow her to do so.

Martha was a member of the Eldon United Methodist Church.  She enjoyed camping and fishing, as well as latch hook and putting together puzzles.  She was a collector of Gothic House and cardinal memorabilia. She never missed an opportunity to spend time with family, which always included laughter and memories from years past that always brought a smile to her face.  Martha fought a courageous, seven-year battle with cancer. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend who made an imprint on many lives in the time that she was here.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clyde and Fred Carter; two sisters, Rosemary Carter and Betty Shumaker; one nephew, Terry Shumaker and the children’s father Loren Marker.

Left to share her story are her children, Bryan Marker (Christopher Erickson) of Des Moines, IA, Michele Marker (Mark Skinner) of Cedar Rapids, and Melinda (Graham) Charron of New Virginia, IA; five grandchildren, Jeremiah Love, Stacey Wyatt, Amber Perry, and Jorden and Jade Charron, as well as ten great grandchildren; four sisters, Lucille Sapp, Dorothy Wells, Ruth Ann Downing, and Patty (Denny) Durflinger; one brother, Allen (Martha) Carter; lifelong best friend, Lori Peercy, as well as many very special nieces and nephews.

Patricia Bauman

Patricia Jean “Paddy” Bauman, 88, of Ottumwa, died at 11:15 p.m. June 7, 2018 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

She was born February 27, 1930 in Ottumwa to Earl E. and Claudine King Christy.  She married Robert A. Bauman on January 16, 1949 and he preceded her in death on December 7, 2015.

A 1947 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Paddy had been a key punch operator at John Morrell & Co. in Ottumwa.  She had been a sales person for Stanley Home Products and had helped at Bauman & Christy State Farm Insurance.

She was a charter member of Bible Baptist Church where she was the organist for over 60 years and taught Sunday school. Paddy loved to travel with her husband, Bob,  and considered her biggest accomplishment was being a mother.

Surviving are her children, Doug (Sue) Bauman, Shirley (Randy) Davis, Vickie (Jim) Burgess and Sherie Anders all of Ottumwa; 5 grandchildren, Wendy Davis,  Tim (Kate) Burgess, Daniel (Heather) Burgess, Heather Rich and Chris (Amanda) Sieren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Judy (David) Ortega of Apache Junction, AZ; 2 brothers, Jim (Beverly Christy and Dick (Janeane) Christy both of Ottumwa; a sister-in-law, Linda Christy of Ottumwa.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Bob Christy and a sister, Connie Warton.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bible Baptist Church with Pastor Ed Matthews officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bible Baptist Church.

Vickie Gleason

Vickie Gleason, 67, of Ottumwa passed away June 11, 2018, at her home in Ottumwa.

Vickie Lea Gleason, daughter of Lester E. and Frances (Kirkendall) Bartlow, was born March 20, 1951, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Following her 1969 graduation from Oskaloosa High School, Vickie traveled to Jeffersonville, Indiana, where she attended nursing school. After completing her education, Vickie returned to Oskaloosa where she practiced nursing. Vickie also resided in Knoxville, Omaha, and Hawaii throughout her lifetime and practiced nursing and later paramedic and phlebotomy in each location. She retired in 2005.

Vickie also met Michael Gleason in 2005, and they were married March 22, 2007. She was a member of Jubilee Family Church. She enjoyed creating jewelry and loved spending time with her family, friends and her dog Darwin.

Her family includes her son, Stacy Bartlow of Crestview, FL; her daughters: Kimberly (Jay) Cahill of Knoxville and Wendy (Bronco Watson) McKinney of Ankeny; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a niece; and special friend Rochelle Vertz.

In addition to her parents, Vickie was preceded in death by her husband, Mike on August 6, 2012; and her brothers: Richard Bartlow and David Duke.
As was her wish, Vickie’s body has been cremated. No services are planned at this time. Langkamp Funeral Chapel & Crematory has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Larry Harsch

Larry Allen Harsch, 82, of rural Ottumwa, died at 8:33 a.m.  June 1, 2018.

He was born February 9, 1936 in Ottumwa to Lloyd William and Mabel Larson Harsch.

Larry was a 1954 graduate of Ottumwa High School and earned a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Iowa.              He played baseball (second base) for the University of Iowa and was a 4-Year Varsity Letter Winner. He also ran track for the university.

After graduating from college, Larry moved to California in 1959 where he served his country for 6 years in the United States Air Force Reserves stationed in San Diego.  He then later became  a teacher and a coach at La Habra High School for 22 years. Then in 1982, he returned home to Ottumwa to be a substitute teacher at Indian Hills Community College. He also worked as a Maintenance Supervisor at Myers North Elm Condominiums in Ottumwa.

Larry was an active member of the Zion Community Church of God and the Gideons in Ottumwa. He believed in sharing God’s word to anyone who wanted to know him and the power of prayer. This was very important to him. He loved to fish and hunt and was an avid outdoors-man, traveling to Canada with his father at a young age and in his older years traveling to Canada with his son, Erik, and friends multiple  times.

Larry Harsch loved life and brought joy and laughter to his family, friends and all who were around him. His piercing blue eyes, sense of humor, smiling face, caring and thoughtfulness will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Surviving are his children, Jill Skindlov of Hayden, ID, Erik Harsch of Fullerton, CA and Jim Harsch of Post Falls, ID; five grandchildren, Gunnar, Konar and Erika Skindlov, Caleb and Cole Harsch; and special friend, Carolyne Thompson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kenneth Harsch.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Strong officiating.  Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Friday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials may be made to Zion Community Church of God or The Gideons International.

Earl Dean Mattly, age 87, of Pleasant Valley, Iowa, formerly of Seymour, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Riverview Manor in Pleasant Valley.

Jerry Baker

Jerry Dean Baker, 85, of Ottumwa, died at 6:45 a.m. June 12, 2018 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

He was born November 19, 1932 in Mt. Pleasant to Noel and Zua Bottorff Baker. Growing up on a farm near Highland Center, Jerry was a graduate of Hedrick High School. He married Helen Joan Williams on July 28, 1956.

Jerry served with the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War and was a participant in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.  He was a transport driver for Lowenberg Bakery, South Hy-Vee and NuCara Pharmacy.

He loved to bowl, golf, go camping, play cribbage, play games, go camping and hunt.  He was a member of the South Central Iowa Bass Club and enjoyed fishing. Jerry and Helen loved wintering in Mesa, AZ and he was deeply loved by family and friends.

Surviving is his wife, Helen; his children, Tammy (Dan) Post of Albia and Ed (Cathy) Baker of Louisville, KY; 3 grandchildren, Michael Hirter (fiancée Heather Baker) of Lake City, FL, Bryan (Tori) Baker of Clarksville, IN and Kyle Smith (Tiana) of Pekin, IL; 3 great-grandchildren, Sean, Hailey and Leighton; siblings, Jane Baker, Beverly (Dale) Coleman, Jean Galpin and David (Sue) Baker; brothers-in-law, Frank Tortat and Harold Allman; many nieces and nephews, and his beloved cat, Missy.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Corey Smith; siblings, Bob, Jim, Dick, Bill, Roger and Jack Baker, JoAnne Tortat, Mary Helen Davis and infant Betty Baker.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Loyd Osborn officiating.  Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.  Cremation will follow the services with inurnment in Shaul Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

Memorials may be made to Heartland Humane Society from where his beloved cat, Missy, was adopted or to the family for a bench to be placed in Ottumwa Park by the trout pond in Jerry’s name.
