Russell “Rusty” Zimmerman, age 66 of Knoxville, passed away on Monday, October 14, 2024 at home of pancreatic cancer with his family at his side. The son of Howard Zimmerman and Betty Jo (Core) Karr, Rusty was born on March 1, 1958, in Knoxville. He graduated from Prairie City High School in 1977. On May 14, 1983, he was united in marriage to Brenda Deitrick at the Prairie City Church of the Brethren.
Rusty worked for MB Oldham Construction in Monroe, Pella Corporation and Cascade Manufacturing in Pleasantville, retiring in 2023. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing, mushroom hunting, sprint car racing as a fan and as a push truck driver at the Knoxville Raceway for 24 years. He met his wife Brenda at the races in Knoxville.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Brenda; mother, Betty Jo Karr; three brothers, Steve (Diane) Zimmerman, Marty (Rhonda) Zimmerman and Andy (Rena Northway) Zimmerman; a sister, Angie (Rod) Schaffer; a brother-in-law, Doug Deitrick and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his beloved grandparents, Howard and Dorothy Core, father, Howard Zimmerman, step-father, Paul Karr and parents-in-law, Clifton and Norma Deitrick.
It was Rusty’s wish to be cremated and no services held. A private family gathering will take place at a later time. Memorials may be made to the Marion County Humane Society, Knoxville Racing Charitable Organization, or to an organization of your choice in his name.
