JoElla Cossel

JoElla Cossel, 84, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on December 21, 2024 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa after a brief illness. She was born on March 25, 1940 to Vaughn Leo and Mabel Irene White Proctor in Ottumwa, Iowa. She lived all of her childhood years on her parents’ century farm near Ash Gove, Iowa. She graduated from Davis County High School in 1958. On October 26, 1958 she married Loren Edwin Cossel in Lancaster, Missouri. He passed away on March 8, 2003.

Through her married years, JoElla was a farm wife. She also worked for the Bloomfield Democrat and the Republican Newspaper; at Super Crost Seed Corn alongside her husband; was a Davis County Supervisor; a bookkeeper for several grain elevators and feed stores; and after her retirement, she was a cashier for Don Horn Auction until she was 80 years old. She attended Stiles Christian Church in Stiles, Iowa and volunteered many hours at the IMO Camp. Her hobbies included traveling with her husband and many friends, volunteering for the Davis County Fairboard, sewing, quilting, and many art projects for her family over the years.

She is survived by four children, Lois (Doug) Heckethorn, Vaughn “Eddie” (Deb) Cossel, Gary (Sheila) Cossel, Lori Altheide; eleven grandchildren; 23 (and soon to be 24) great-grandchildren; brother, Gene (Kathy) Proctor; two sisters-in-law, Kay Proctor and Lois McMillin; as well as her nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; husband; brother, Max Proctor; and brother-in-law, John McMillin II.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 27, 2024 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with her nephew and Ozark Christian College President, Matt Proctor, officiating. Burial will be at the West Grove Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to the Davis County Fair and the Living Water Christian Mission in Gonaives, Haiti. Pallbearers will be Luke Altheide, Mason Altheide, Dustin Heckethorn, Aaron Cossel, Philip Stueve and Gibb Johnson.
