Gary Earl Salter, 84 of Ottumwa died at 3:21 a.m. April 16, 2025 at his home.
He was born October 28, 1940 in Ottumwa to Earl and Mary Slonaker Salter. Gary married Judy Diane Schaub February 23, 1988.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School, Gary was a police officer for the city of Ottumwa for 30 years. He had been a security guard for Indian Hills Community College and for Cargill Meat Solutions.
Gary was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #114 and a social member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, playing pool and umpiring Little League games. He also enjoyed playing poker with other retired police officers.
Surviving is his wife Judy; their children, Randy (Sue) Salter of Missouri, Vicki Sheldon of Illinois, Kaitlyn Martin of Cedar Rapids and Kimberly Jo (Alan) Ancell of Ottumwa; grandchildren, Rusty, Cory, Jordyn Juliana, Jeannie, Ricki and Cassidy; several great-grandchildren including, Chaylen, JJ and Kyra; and a great-great granddaughter, Maci-jo; and a sister, Judy Soots of Peoria, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Mary Salter; grandson, Logan Ancell; sister, Patty Paytes; brother, Teddy Salter; and son-in-law, William Martin.
Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 19th at Reece Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the visitation.
Memorials may be made to the family.
