DUANE HEISERMAN
OTTUMWA – Duane Melvin Heiserman, 71, of rural Ottumwa, died at 5:30 a.m. January 8, 2017 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
He was born February 28, 1945 in Manchester, IA to LeRoy and Ida Robinson Heiserman. He married Virginia Hodges with whom he had three children. They later divorced. He married Nancy Jean Minikus Lewis June 12, 1976 in Las Vegas, NV.
A graduate of Manchester High School, Duane grew up working for his father’s commercial painting company. He worked for City Laundry in Olwein for a short time before starting with Fareway Grocery in 1964. He worked in many different communities with Fareway, moving from Algona to Ottumwa in 1988 to take the position as Meat Manager at the Ottumwa Fareway Store. Duane retired in March of 2004.
He enjoyed to deer hunt, fishing at Osage Beach and traveling to Las Vegas. Working on lawnmowers since a young age, Duane maintained a meticulous lawn and enjoyed tinkering in his shop fixing many small engines and motors.
Surviving is his wife, Nancy; 4 children, Martin Heiserman of Miles, Sheila (Kevin) Taylor of Dunlap, IL, Anna Heiserman of Miles and Shelley (Clay) Helm of Herrin, IL; 12 grandchildren; a great -granddaughter; a sister, Sharon (James) Boardman of Cedar Rapids; 2 brothers, Allyn (Alice “Jo” Heiserman of Visalia, CA and Roger Heiserman of Waterville, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael Heiserman.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be at Peace Cemetery in Ryan, IA on Thursday.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the family present from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to Hospice serving Davis and Wapello Counties, 927 Pennsylvania Ave. Ottumwa, IA 52501.
