HELEN McELROY

OTTUMWA-Beulah Helen McElroy, 89, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 10:37 a.m. April 24, 2017 at Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.

She was born September 7, 1927 in Monroe County, IA to Herbert Walter and Elsie Marie Stansberry Dodge.  She married Charles Russell “Rusty” McElroy on September 1,  1978 and he preceded her in death on July 24, 2009.

Helen was a 1947 graduate of Albia High School and had lived in Wapello County most of her life. She had worked in accounting for the City of Ottumwa, Zlogar Construction and Valley Supply.

She was a member of the Ottumwa Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Helen loved to crochet, work with ceramics, loved to go fishing with her husband and bird watching with putting up many bird houses.  She enjoyed wintering in Texas.

Surviving is her son, Frederick Milton Fillmore of Minneapolis, MN; 2 grandchildren,  Elizabeth Palmer of Minneapolis, MN and Andrew Fillmore of Columbia Heights, MN; and a sister, Jean Buwalda of Farmington, MN.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Clella Reynolds and Veda Speer and two brothers, Harold and Carol Dodge.

Funeral services will be  10 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Elder Kenneth Tipton officiating.  Cremation will follow the services.  Inurnment will be Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

The family will be present one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

RAYMOND SCHLEGEL

Milton

Raymond P. Schlegel, 79, of Milton, died at 12:50 a.m. on Friday, April 21, 2017, at home. He was born September 6, 1937, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Aaron and Lillian (Lutty) Schlegel. He was married to Joanne Johnson on June 16, 1962, in Moline, IL.

Ray grew up in Pittsburgh and spent the first half of his adult years in Davenport, After retirement, he and Jo moved to Milton. Ray had trained as a diesel mechanic in our United States Army and used his talent in his years of work at Linwood Mining & Minerals, Buffalo, IA, Dohrn Transfer, Rock Island, IL and finally retired from McCarthy Improvement Co., Davenport, IA. He was a member of Oak Hills Gun Club, the Izaak Walton League, Russell-Strait Post No. 483 and was a lifetime member of the NRA. Ray enjoyed training his numerous hunting dogs, hunting, fishing, finding Morel mushrooms and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, Joanne, he is survived by a son, Steve Kazenske (Melody) of LeClaire, IA, a daughter, Paula Venema (Michael) of Des Moines, IA, a brother, Bill Schlegel of PA, three sisters, Donna Farrell of PA, Marie McDine of DE, Kathleen Nehilla of PA, five grandchildren, Harmony, Amanda, Shayna, Dalton and Adrien, and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons, Nathan and Logan, and a great-grandson, Jaykob.

In accordance with his wishes, his body has been cremated and a memorial gathering/luncheon to celebrate his life, will be held at the Heritage Center, Milton, on June 17, 2017, from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Memorial gifts can be made to Hospice of Ottumwa or to the family and mailed to the family at 203 East Maple Street, Milton, IA 52570.

A special thank you to the staff at Hospice, Regional Home Health Care, Davis Co. Hospital and his granddaughter, Shayna, for all of the exceptional health, personal and spiritual care provided to him and the family this past year.

STELLA CREECH

OTTUMWA-Stella Mae Creech, 100, of Ottumwa and formerly of Eldon, died at 1:50 p.m. April 29, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.

She was born August 14, 1916 in Linwood, IA to Ralph William and Cora Mae Stewart Russell.  She married George Washington Creech on June 12, 1935.  He preceded her in death on December 26, 1981.

Stella lived in Eldon from 1947 to 1991 before moving to Ottumwa.

She had attended Living Hope Bible Church in Eldon and was a lifetime member of PTA.

Surviving are three sons, Marvin (Mary Ellen) Creech of Eldon, Delbert (Penny) Creech of Mt. Pleasant, Charles Creech of Ottumwa and two daughters, Sharon Steen of Eldon and Lisa Creech of Ottumwa; a son-in-law, Frank Weeks of Eldon; twenty grandchildren, thirty-five great -grandchildren and sixteen great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by two daughters, Katherine Orman and Charlotte Weeks and a son, Ralph Creech; two son-in-laws, Gene Orman and Verle Steen; two grandchildren and a great-grandson; three brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Living Hope Bible Church with Rev. Mark Clark and Rev. David Albert officiating. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery near Eldon.

Visitation begins 10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.  The family will also be at the church one hour prior to service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Living Hope Bible Church or the family.

AGENCY-Edith M. “Edie” Heemsbergen, 76, of Agency, died April 28, 2017 in Kansas City, MO.

She was born May 27, 1940 in Bladensburg to Noah Samuel and Lola M. Black Reinier.  She married George Stouthammer January of 1964.  He preceded her in death in May of 1987.  She married Garrett Heemsbergen in January of 1990.  He preceded her in death in December of 1990.

A graduate of Agency High School, she had worked as a home health care aid and for several nursing homes.

Edie had been a member of O.B. Nelson Unit #3 American Legion Auxiliary and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.  She loved birds, cooking, traveling and taking drives in the country.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Shelly (John) Fletchall and Brenda (Tom) Awe both of Kansas City, MO; 6 grandchildren, Corey (Courtney) O’Dell, Kylie (Kenny) O’Dell Hall, Haley Hughes, Ethan Fletchall William Awe and Angelica Awe all of Kansas City, MO; 8 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers, Stanley Reinier of Martinsburg, Leslie Reinier of Baldwin City, KS and Wayne Reinier of Valpraiso, FL; a sister, Rose Mary Moyer of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Howard and Kenneth Reinier; two sisters, Edna Culley and Elsie Vinson and her beloved dog Mitzi Rose.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Thomas Shipley officiating.  Burial will be at Batavia Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday with the family present one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Susan G. Komen For the Cure.

GUY GUITER

OTTUMWA-Guy Joseph Guiter, 65, of Ottumwa, died May 3, 2017 in Ottumwa.

He was born October 4, 1951 in Granville, OH to Loren F. and Nancy Jane Townsend Guiter.  He married Donna Smith and they later divorced.

A 1970 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Guy had attended Ottumwa Heights College.  He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for 30 years and farmed.

Joe enjoyed attending auctions and spending holidays with family.  He was an avid sports fan and loved animals.

Surviving are two daughters, Amie Adams of Eddyville and Natalie (Jason) Gottwals of Franklin, TN; three sons, Scott (Michelle) Guiter of Knoxville, Justin Guiter of Altoona and Mike Guiter of Creston; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Kathryn (Kerm) Kirchoff of Overland Park, KS; three brothers, Frederick (Carol) Guiter of Batavia, Tom (Sherri) Guiter of Odessa, TX and Terry (Barb) Guiter of Ottumwa; several nieces and nephews; and his friend, Teresa Fogle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Christopher Guiter; and a son-in-law, Brian Adams.

His body has been cremated.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home.  Inurnment will be in Burns Cemetery.  A reception will follow at Faith Community Church in Eddyville.

JAMES HAYES

OTTUMWA-James H. Hayes, 84, formerly of Valley Village Trailer Court, died at 4:58 p.m. May 3, 2017 at Ridgewood Specialty Care in Ottumwa where he had resided for the past 4 years.

The son of Irma and Gayle Crow, he was born March 3, 1933 in Eldon. He married the love of his life, Shirley Ann McIntire on July 24, 1953 in Pacific Grove, CA.  They were blessed with 2 children, Bob and Connie.  She preceded him in death on December 21, 1990 after 37 years of marriage.  He later married Helen Ward on December 30, 1991 and she preceded him in death on August 8, 2005.

He served with the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.

James attended Ottumwa High School through the 11th grade.  James was employed at John Morrell & Co for 22 years until their closing in 1973.  He then obtained his GED and attended Indian Hills Community College where he received his diploma in welding.  In 1974 he started working for John Deere Ottumwa Works and worked there for 21 years until his retirement in 1995.

James enjoyed trap shooting and was a member of Izaak Walton for over 45 years.  He enjoyed small game hunting, fishing, hunting morel mushrooms and riding his Honda Gold Wing.  He was a fan of NASCAR and Dale Ernhardt and Dale Jr.

James was a member of the Willard Street United Methodist Church and for over 40 years a member of UAW Local #74.

Jim is survived by his children, Robert Hayes of New Sharon and Connie Jo (John) Rosenbalm of Ottumwa; 3 grandchildren, Thad Smith of Cedar, Ashley Smith of Ottumwa and Tory Hayes of New Sharon; 4 great-grandchildren, Madison, Eve, Wyatt and Joselyn.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Friday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heartland Humane Society or Care Initiatives Hospice.

Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Mineart

Keosauqua

Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Mineart unexpectedly departed this earth on May 15, 2017.  She lived in Keosauqua, IA for the majority of her life.  She accomplished many things in her short life, but the thing she was most proud of was being a mother to her 2 children, Bryson Edward James and Corinna Marie Mineart.

Cindy was preceded in death by her father, Raleigh Annis Jr., and her former husband, Brock Mineart.  Survivors include her children, Bryson and Corinna Mineart, her companion Scotton Starnes, her mother, Lana Annis; siblings Tracy Cardenas, Ricki (Dave) Krcmarik, Patty Lefler, Raleigh ‘Capp’ (Nicole) Annis and Shelby (Tad) Runyon and her in-laws, Charlie and Gloria Starnes.

There will be a celebration of life for Cindy, in conjunction with the celebration of life for her father on May 20, 2017 at Wildwood Park in Ottumwa IA @ 3pm.

The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers or other memorial gifts, that monetary gifts be sent to 510 Market Street, Keosauqua, IA 52565 or brought to the celebration of life to assist her children and family with memorial costs and trust funds for her children.

FRANK COMSTOCK

EDDYVILLE – Frank E. Comstock, 92, of Eddyville, died at 9:57 a.m. May 14, 2017 at Ridgewood Specialty Care in Ottumwa.

He was born October 1, 1924 in Albia.  He was adopted and raised by his maternal grandparents, Frank and Liz Comstock.  He married Virginia M. Paxton June 2, 1964.  She preceded him in death October 29, 1990.

A graduate of Albia High School, Frank served in the U.S. Army during World War II.  He owned and operated with his brother, Greg, Comstock Saw Mill where they were partners for 52 years.  A resident of Eddyville most of his life, he moved to Ottumwa in 1964, moving back to rural Eddyville in 1975.

He had been a member of the Eddyville Masonic Lodge #74 A.F. & A.M., Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling.

Surviving is his daughter, Sherry Good of Cedar Falls; 3 step-children, Larry Michael (Pat) Paxton of Ankeny, Roger Paxton of Gladstone, IL and Linda (Robert “Otis”) Wallace of Ottumwa; 4 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 12 step-great grandchildren; 7 step-great great grandchildren; and his companion of 20 years, Betty Peck.

He was preceded in death by a step-son, Bill Paxton; a step-grandson, Chris Crumes; 4 brothers, George Williams, Joe Williams, Rex Williams and Greg Comstock.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Roger Henry officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

OTTUMWA – Juanita L. Paulos, 81, of Ottumwa died at 9:15 p.m. May 5, 2017 at Ridgewood Specialty Care in Ottumwa.

She was born July 9, 1935 in Ottumwa to Daniel and Emma Collier Cliburn.  She married Harry Paulos on December 5, 1952.  He preceded her in death January 27, 1961.

Surviving is a daughter, Agnes (Gary) Forrester of Princton, IA; two grandsons, Richard Wells and Paul “Tony” Wells both of Moline, IL; three great -grandchildren, Austin Wells, Michael Wells and Jessica Bractel.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Maxie, Pearl, Lydie and Tressie Mae; three brothers, John, Leonard and Samuel.

Her body has been cremated.

Graveside services and inurnment will be at 12 p.m. noon on Saturday May 20, 2017 at Memorial Lawn Cemetery with Pastor Ed Matthews officiating.

Memorials may be made to the family.

BILL  SHEPHERD

OTTUMWA – Billie Ray Shepherd, 80, of 102 W. Finley died April 21, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa.

He was born August 14, 1936 in Drakesville, IA to Claud and Vera Faye Wintermote Shepherd.

A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1954, Bill was a local musician, recording and writing his own music.  He had worked at Cedar Creek Golf Course for 16 years.

Surviving are five children, Patty (Sonny) Parkman of Houston, TX, Terry “Roy” (Cathy) Shepherd of Ottumwa, Lisa (Chad LeStrange) Greve of Ruthven, Jerry (fiancée Monica Barker) Shepherd of Ottumwa and Holly (Gary) McMahon of Centerville; 15 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a sister, Nancy (Francis) Harris of Sigourney; a sister-in-law, Linda Shepherd of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Curtis Ray Shepherd; and a brother, Jack Shepherd.

His body has been cremated.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Randy Saylor officiating.

Memorials may be made to American Parkinson’s Disease Association or Good Samaritan Hospice.

OTTUMWA-Gladyth “Dage” Irene Stuhr, 76, of Ottumwa, died at 11:20 a.m. May 14, 2017 at her home.

She was born July 25, 1940 in Ottumwa to Vernon and Erie Larue Holton Ross.  She married Junior McConnell and he preceded her in death on March 25, 1985.  She married Lyall D. Stuhr Sr. on December 21, 1986 and he preceded her in death on May 31, 2015.

She was a farm wife and a hard worker. Dage was a loving mother, a meticulous housekeeper, and enjoyed yard work and fishing.

Surviving are her sons, Les McConnell and Scott (Lisa) McConnell; four grandchildren, Cody McConnell, Collin McConnell, Jenny (Josh) Downing and Katie McConnell; four great-grandchildren, Madison, Bailey, Karson and Olivia; a brother, Kenny (Alicia) Ross of Ottumwa and a sister, Beverly Phillips of Ottumwa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a great-grandson, Logan; siblings, Maxine Martin, Linda Poole, Carolyn Morris, Janice Hanson, Barb Johnson and John Collier.

Her body has been cremated.

Graveside services and inurnment will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery south of Fremont with Pastor Jay Allison officiating.

Charles J. Conger, age 87, was born south of Cincinnati, Iowa on May 19, 1929, the son of Charles M. and Clittie Parlee (Mikels) Conger, and passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at the Golden Age Care Center in Centerville.

OTTUMWA – Shawn Brian Shepard, 53, of 1208 W. Williams St., died at 12:20 p.m. May 20, 2017 at his home.

He was born March 21, 1964 in Ottumwa to Byron G. and Leanna K. Schulz Shepard.  He married Angela Marie Bennett  on September 7, 1985.

A 1982 graduate of Ottumwa High School, he was trained in Waste Water Treatment at Kirkwood Community College.

Shawn worked for Hormel and Everco for a short time and for the past 27 years for the Ottumwa Water Pollution Control Facility.

He was a member of Teamsters Local #238.  He enjoyed motorcycle races and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Surviving is his wife, Angela; a daughter, Lacey (Gale) Hopkins of Ottumwa; a son, Codey Shepard of Lafayette, CO; a brother, Martin Shepard of Ottumwa; two sisters, Sherri  Lipp (Kevin Sellars) of Ottumwa and Renette Riccardo of Montezuma.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandmothers, Bessie Shepard and Velda Schulz.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Jeremy Skinner officiating.  Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

BERNICE HARMON

OTTUMWA-Bernice Ann Harmon, 84, of Ottumwa, died at 3:10 a.m. May 21, 2017 at the Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center.

She was born April 26, 1933 in Albia to Louis and Marget Scully Kellogg.  She married Raymond Shaw on April 29, 1951 and he preceded her in death in December of 1967.  She married Forest Eugene Harmon in 1969 and he preceded her in death on February 12, 1996.

A resident of Ottumwa for the past 30 years, Bernice lived in several places including Albia for many years.  She was the head cook at several nursing homes and also the Albia Country Club.  She owned several bars and had worked at the A&W Root Beer in Ottumwa.  Bernice and her husband, Gene, were foster parents.

She enjoyed cooking, sewing, attending auctions and casinos as well as taking care of her grandchildren and her beloved dog, Charlie.

Surviving are her children, Theresa Shaw of Ottumwa, Nancy Parker of Ottumwa, Sheila (Steve) Kono of Grimes, Raymond “John” (Barb) Shaw of Ottumwa, Allen Shaw of Ottumwa, Burley (Gayle) Harmon of Sully and Mike (Jackie) Kalar of Ottumwa; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Maryellen Kellogg, Marjorie Fisk and Virginia Kellogg; and a brother, William Kellogg.

She was preceded in death by a son, William Harmon; a great-grandson, Blake Nichols; 4 brothers, Orville, James, Jack and Louis “Butch” Kellogg Jr. and 2 sisters, Lula Mortley and Shirley Kellogg.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating.  Cremation will follow the services.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday with the family present from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

OTTUMWA – Penny L. Waldren, 68, of 119 S. Ash St., died at 9:45 p.m. May 20, 2017 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

She was born June 8, 1948 in Centerville to Clarence Raymond and Geraldine Richmond Stockton. She married Roger Waldren in August of 1991.

A 1966 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Penny had attended Faith Baptist College in Ankeny.  She had worked for the Ottumwa schools administrative office and for Habitat for Humanity.

She was a founding board member of Jacob’s Gift and shared her love of scripture while mentoring many women over the years.

Surviving is a daughter, Angela (Jon) Pedersen of Ottumwa; three sons, Christopher (Melinda) Manus of Pasadena, CA, James Manus of Dallas, TX, and Matthew (Gia) Manus of Los Angeles, CA; eight grandchildren, Jonathan, Samuel and Emma Pedersen, Ainsley, Tilli, Sophia, Cozette and Atreyu Manus; two step-children, Jennifer (Matt) Stookey and Mike Waldren; three step-grandchildren, Skyler, Savannah and Zander; two brothers, Mike (Sue) Stockton of Ottumwa and Pat (Jane) Stockton of Knoxville, IA; an aunt, Sue Ann (Wayne) Veach of Centerville.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be   10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall and Pastor Roger Hemmings officiating.  Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Livonia, MO.

Visitation will begin 11 a.m. Wednesday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Jacob’s Gift.

CYNTHIA WARE-RUPE

OTTUMWA-Cynthia Ware-Rupe, of Ottumwa, Iowa passed away on May 16, 2017, at home in the loving arms of her family.

She was born on September 1, 1948 to Marie Coyne Pointer. Shortly after she was adopted by Harold and Aletha Ryals Ware of Ottumwa.  She married John F. Perdue on March 15, 1968 and had a child Lisa Ellen.  They later divorced. She married Wilbur D. Rupe on September 19, 1980.

She was a graduate of Ottumwa High School and earned a Criminal Justice Degree from Indian Hills Community College.  She worked as a security officer at Cargill in Eddyville.  Following her love for retail and people, she worked at Hickory House, Seiferts, Herbergers, and K-Mart. She also worked at Seneca.

She is survived her husband, Wilbur Rupe of Ottumwa, Iowa; one daughter, Lisa (Bob) Edie of Urich, Missouri; a brother, Mike (Joyce) Ware of Perry, Iowa; her biological mother Marie Coyne Pointer of Portland, Oregon; nieces and a nephew; aunts and uncles; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her beloved dog Elsa, her parents, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Father Patrick Hilgendorf officiating.  Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

DEAN PROUGH

OTTUMWA-Dean Halsey Prough, 95, of Ottumwa, died at 3 p.m. May 24, 2017 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

He was born July 7, 1921 in Wayne County, IA to Halsey Sutherland and Fern Elizabeth Richards Prough.  On July 23, 1946 he married Doris M. Bunch.

Dean was a graduate of Ottumwa High School.  He was a World War II Army veteran having served with the 5th Armored Division.

He worked for 37 years at Barker Poultry, retiring as general foreman in 1978.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, Empire Masonic Lodge #269 A.F. & A.M., O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and a former member of the Ottumwa Park Board.

Surviving is his wife, Doris; a son, Richard (Joyce) Prough of St. Robert, MO; Patricia (Mike) Colliflower who was raised in the home; a grandson, Frederick (Diane) Prough of Adel; 2 great-grandchildren, Nathan and Rachel Prough; 3 step-grandchildren,  Rachel (Doug) McMahan, Erik (Juana) Saaranen, Anna Liisa (Curtis) Lundgren; 4 step-great-grandchildren, Alma Saaranen, Rauha Saaranen, Sonya Lundgren and Eli Lundgren.

He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Fern and Elmer Bradshaw.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O. B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Monday.  A Masonic service will be 3 p.m. Monday followed by family visitation until 5 p.m. Monday.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association.

  GORDON COOPER

OTTUMWA – Gordon F. Cooper, 92, of Lake Suzy, Florida, and formerly of Ottumwa and Centerville, passed away March 21, 2017.

Gordon was a native of Rhode Island and a WWII Navy pilot. He was with Iowa Southern Utilities for nearly 40 years, becoming senior vice president and director before his retirement in 1989.  In addition to his involvement in numerous civic organizations, Gordon enjoyed flying several planes he owned after his Navy years and sailing several sailboats with friends and family. While living in Centerville, he was president of the Rathbun Lake Association and commodore at the Lake Rathbun yacht club.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marie, and infant son, Ronald. He is survived by sons Gordon Jr. (Pat) of Fairhope, Alabama, Gary (Julie) of Des Moines, Iowa, daughters Michelle (Scot Pralle) of Medina, Minnesota, and Denise Method (Victor) of Park City, Utah, a brother Roy (Judy), seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at the First Lutheran Church in Ottumwa at with Pastor Mark Johnson officiating.  Inurnment will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Memorials may be made to the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation.

Reece Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
