Charles Hale

CHARLES HALE

AGENCY-Charles Rex Hale, 88, of Agency, died at 8:12 p.m. April 6, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.

He was born April 4, 1929 in Floris to Floyd William and Etta Mae Bales Hale.  He married Ena Faye Blythe on July 1, 1953 and she preceded him in death on April 13, 1987.

A graduate of Bloomfield High School, Charles had worked for 10 years at Phillip Morris, 29 years for Merchants Wholesale and 10 years at Arizona State University.  He had lived in Arizona for the past 20 years, moving back to Ottumwa in February 2017.

He was a member of Davis Street Christian Church where he has served as an Elder and taught Sunday school, also a member of Empire Masonic Lodge #269 A.F. & A.M., Davenport Consistory and AARP.  He had coached Pee Wee  Little League and Babe Ruth and was a licensed umpire.

Surviving are his children, Gregory (Nini) Hale of Houston, TX, Jeffery (Toni) Hale of Agency, Melody (Elroy) Schlake of Thompson, IA, Markham (Barb) Hale of Milford, IA, Jon (Missy) Hale and Karla (Jerry) Van Ness both of Ottumwa; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Floyd (Carol) Hale Jr. of Floris and Dale (Margie) Hale of Tacoma, WA.

He was preceded in death by  three brothers, Clinton, Carl and Frederick Hale; two sisters, Sarah Duncan and Mary Pominville.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. James H. Wakelin officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Tuesday.  A Masonic service will be held at 6 p.m. followed by family visitation until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to Davis Street Christian Church or Care Initiatives Hospice.

JACK LECHNER

OTTUMWA-Richard “Jack” L. Lechner, 87, of Ottumwa, died at 3:45 p.m. April 10, 2017 at Vista Woods Care Center.

He was born December 26, 1929 in Morning Sun, IA to Arthur Lee and Avis Vivian Swearingen Lechner.  He married Ruby Jean McFall on October 16, 1948 in Oskaloosa and she preceded him in death on May 26, 1998.

Jack was a route salesman and driver for Coca Cola  for 30 years, retiring in 1994.

He was a member of the First Christian Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Jane Lechner of Ottumwa and Barbara (Robert W.) Wilson of Mesa, AZ; three grandchildren, Dr. Douglas (Andrea) Wilson and their daughter, Daphne of Camdenton, MO, Robyn (Ross) Klawitter and their children, Macie and Brodie of Gilbert, AZ and Tyler Wilson of Mesa, AZ; and a sister, Ruth Jean Parle of Humboldt.

He was preceded in death by a brother, George Lechner and a sister, Jeanette Lechner.

Graveside services and burial will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Township Cemetery north of Fremont with Pastor Gary Brooks and Pastor Robert W. Wilson officiating.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heartland Humane Society, PO Box 1149, Ottumwa, IA 52501.

Norton Giltner

NORTON GILTNER

BATAVIA – James Norton Giltner, 77, of 1898 Carnation Blvd., died at 11:14 p.m. April 7, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center West Lakes in West Des Moines.

He was born July 16, 1939 in rural Batavia to Everett and Alyce Bennett Giltner.  He married Addie Kay James on December 21, 1974.

A graduate of Batavia High School, he attended Parsons College.

Norton farmed all of his life in Wapello and Jefferson Counties.

He was a member of Batavia United Methodist Church where he served as the Administrative Board Chairman and a Trustee for many years.  He was also a township trustee, served on the board of directors for the Farmers Cooperative and the Supply Cooperative Association for many years.

He loved sprint car racing and Indian Hills basketball.  He was attentive in caring for his animals and working the gate at the Wapello County Fairs in Eldon for many years.

Surviving is his wife, Addie Kay; two sons, Jay Norton Giltner of Batavia and Matt James (Kelly) Giltner of Mt. Zion, IL; four grandchildren, Brett James, Krista Beth, Luca Elizabeth and Calla Grace; a sister, Mildred (Gary) Vannoy of Richland; and a sister-in-law, Cleo Giltner of Batavia; numerous nieces and nephews that were very close to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harold Dean Giltner.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Batavia United Methodist Church with Pastor Michael Finn officiating.  Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to Batavia United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.

Everett Pilkington

EVERETT PILKINGTON

HEDRICK-Everett Dean Pilkington, 87, of rural Hedrick, died at 7:15 p.m. April 8, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born July 8, 1929 in Sigourney to Ralph and Bessie Dick Pilkington.  He married Joan Meeks on June 21, 1956 in Sigourney.

Everett was a 1947 graduate of Hedrick High School, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as an aircraft mechanic.

He had worked for Van Zetten Implement Co. in Ottumwa, Rouw AC, Rely Tractor, Ford Garage in Sigourney and Oldsmobile in Oskaloosa.  He was an instructor at Indian Hills Community College for the Agriculture Mechanic Division for 22 years, retiring in 1992.  He then continued in farming through his retirement.

Everett loved camping at the Iowa State Fair, playing steel guitar in the Silver Strings Band, woodworking and attending auctions.  He operated the popcorn stand at the roller hockey events in Delta.

Surviving is his wife, Joan; his children, Dan Lee (Gail) Pilkington of Sigourney, Linda Sue (Greg) Miller of Indianola, Don Dean Pilkington of North English, Phyllis Ann (Jim) Fairchild of Delta; daughter-in-law, Vida Pilkington of Belle Plaine; 9 grandchildren, Trent (Kim) Pilkington, Whitney Miller, Ashley (Dillon) Brandt, Kelsey (Branden) Bloom, James Pilkington, Kayla Pilkington, Kyle (Tyanda) Fairchild, Kaitlyn (Luke) Brown and Kassandra (Tyler) Taft; 9 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ralph (Cheryl) Pilkington of Albion, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating.  Burial will be in Brooks Cemetery near Hedrick with military services conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to the family to be designated at a later date.

JOEEN BROWN

Hillsboro

Joeen Brown, 88, formerly of Hillsboro died at 10:05 A.M. Wednesday April 12, 2017 at Keosauqua Health Care Center with her family by her side.  She was born December 7, 1928 in rural Hillsboro to Eugene R. and Iona N. Logan Dinsmore and married Dale O. Brown on June 22, 1947 at Sharon Presbyterian Parsonage north of Farmington.  He died January 19, 1991.

Joeen graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1946 and spent her adult life in Van Buren and Lee Counties where she was a farm homemaker.  She had been a 4H and Girl Scout Leader in Keosauqua, loved her cats, enjoyed gardening, growing flowers and crocheting, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Joeen is survived by a daughter, Nancy Carr (Rex) of Keosauqua, a brother, Gary Dinsmore (Sam) of Houston, TX, seven grandchildren, Michelle Mize, Jason Hoaglin, Angela Darnell, Amanda Reineke, Julie Thomas, Chad Carr and Sara Weltha and 14 great-grandchildren.  In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by two daughters, Jeanne Hoglin and Susan Helterbran.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday April 17, 2017 at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua with Pastor Mary Kathryn Hart officiating.  Visitation with family and friends will be 10-11A.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.  Burial will in Hillsboro Cemetery.  Gifts to a memorial to be designated later by the family may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 19103 Quiet Trail, Keosauqua, IA 52565

JUNE LOY

OTTUMWA-June Maxine Loy, 91, of Ottumwa, died at 5:10 p.m. April 13, 2017 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

She was born on June 9, 1925 in Albia to Lawrence Daniel and Opal Grace Shipley Clouse.  She married Ernest Ellsworth Loy on October 12, 1947.

June was a 1943 graduate of Ottumwa High School and while in high school she worked for the Ottumwa Board of Education.  She attended the Iowa Success Business College.  June had worked in accounting for Barker’s Poultry and had worked for John Deere Ottumwa Works.

She was a member of Willard St. United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer, a member of Willard St.  United Methodist Women, where she held several offices.  She was an active member and past president of Jefferson School PTA.

Surviving is her husband, Ernest; her children,  Greg (Karen) Loy of Ottumwa, Cindy (John) Shilling of Centerville and Jeff (Terry) Loy of Ottumwa; 6 grandsons, Aaron (Alisha) Loy of Williamsburg, Adam (Erin) Loy of Granger, Joshua (Erin) Loy of Ft. Collins, CO, Nathan (Beth) Shilling of Centerville, Nicolas (Jami) Shilling of Centerville and Ryan Shilling of Wheat Ridge, CO; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Wilma Jean Stevens of Ottumwa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a great-grandson, Tripp

Ernest Loy.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Willard St. United Methodist Church with Rev. Leila Disburg officiating.  Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

BEVERLY DAVISON

OTTUMWA – Beverly J. Davison, 93, of Ottumwa, died at 12:43 a.m. April 9, 2017 at Vista Woods Care Center.

She was born March 15, 1924 in Chariton, IA to Thomas K. and Nora F. Woodman Kendall. She married Edward Davison on December 6, 1945 in Chariton and he preceded her in death on October 25, 1961.

Beverly received a scholarship to Ottumwa Heights Academy and graduated from the Academy.  She worked for 42 years for Western Union, retiring as manager from the Des Moines office in 1984.

She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar & Rosary Society, Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, a lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit #3 and a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #114 Auxiliary.  Beverly was past-president of St. Patrick School P.T.A. and served as district president of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving is her daughter, Nancy (Clarence) Becker of Hawk Point, MO; two grandsons, Michael E. Becker and Andrew J. Becker both of Hawk Point, MO; 3 great-grandchildren, Ashley Becker, Anthonie Becker and Johnathan Becker; and a step-brother, Bill (Darlene) Croft of Estherville.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Patrick Hilgendorf presiding.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with a service conducted by O.B. Nelson Unit #3 American Legion Auxiliary.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home.  A Christian Wake will be held at 6 p.m. Monday followed by family visitation until 8 p.m. Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to O.B. Nelson Unit #3 American Legion Auxiliary.

BILL HARMON

OTTUMWA – William Eugene Harmon, 44, of 225 S. Adella died April 14, 2017 at his home.

He was born February 6, 1973 in Alta, IA, the son of Forest Eugene and Bernice Ann Kellogg Harmon.

A resident of Ottumwa most of his life, Bill had worked for Waste Management, a moving company, making burial vaults and delivering pizzas.  For the past 3 years he had worked for American Bottling.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting mushrooms, riding his motorcycle, attending auctions and visiting casinos.

Surviving is his daughter, Hailey Harmon; his mother, Bernice Harmon of Ottumwa; 6 siblings, Theresa Shaw of Ottumwa; Nancy Parker of Ottumwa; Sheila (Steve) Kono of Grimes, Raymond “John” (Barb) Shaw of Ottumwa, Allen Shaw of Ottumwa and Burley (Gayle) Harmon of Sully; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Forest Harmon.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the services.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to the family for his daughter’s education.

OTTUMWA-Bradley Charles Meade, 46, of Ottumwa, formerly of Eddyville, died April 18, 2017 at home.

He was born July 6, 1970 in Fairfield to Terry Lee and Sheryl Ann Hagler Meade.

A 1988 graduate of Eddyville High School, he had worked for Lobberecht Construction in Eddyville for 20 years.

Surviving is his mother, Sheryl (Jerald) Streeper of Maquoketa; his father, Terry (Crista) Meade of Birmingham; a sister, Nicole (Dale) Bright of Janesville; a niece, Samantha Wyckoff; several cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

His body has been cremated.  Graveside services and inurnment will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton.

Memorials may be made to Hogs 4 Dogs USA.

David Allen Moran age 49, of Fairfield passed away Friday, April 21, 2017.

David was born July 13, 1967 to Dave Moran and Jean (Heckethorn) Spalla.

David graduated from Fairfield High School with the class of 1986. He was self-employed. David was a Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye football fan. He was an avid Trojan fan, who took the most pride in watching his son play sports. David enjoyed spending time outside fishing, hunting and morel mushroom hunting.

David is survived by his son, Cody Moran of North Liberty, IA; his mother and step dad, Jean and John Spalla of Fairfield, IA; 4 siblings, Corinna (Steve) Walz of Lockridge, IA, Carla (Doug) Crawford of Birmingham, IA, Tommy (Nicole) Spalla of Lockridge, IA and Nikki (Chris) Rude of Fairfield, IA; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; and special friend, Shelly Moore.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dave Moran; his brother, Mike Klett; grandparents, Mervin & Bessie Irene Heckethorn; and mentor and friend, Bill Meck.

DIANA DURFLINGER

OTTUMWA-Diana Lucille Durflinger, 79, of rural Ottumwa, died at 10:07 p.m. April 19, 2017 at Ridgewood Specialty Care in Ottumwa.

She was born February 24, 1938 in Ottumwa to Charles and Gladys Pumroy Dorn.  On February 2, 1958 she married Lloyd W. Durflinger and he preceded her in death on July 15, 2014.

A 1956 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Diana was a homemaker.

She was a member of Bladensburg Christian Church.

Diana enjoyed bowling, decorating wedding cakes, wallpapering, upholstering furniture, canning, gardening, oil painting, wood working and sewing blankets.  Most importantly, she loved her family.

Surviving are her children, Bob (Tracie) Durflinger, Wayne (Keni) Durflinger, Carla Wagamon and Patti (Jim) Benson all of Ottumwa; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Monty Wagamon; and her  six siblings, Charles Robert Dorn, William Eugene Dorn, Alice Elizabeth Dorn, Mary Patricia Stonum, Joseph Edward Dorn and Bonnie Jean Hoefer.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Smith officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Friday with the family  present from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday.

WILLIS HOFFMAN

BLOOMFIELD-Willis Ward Hoffman, 76, of Bloomfield, died at 5:20 p.m. April 19, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.

He was born September 4, 1940 in Ottumwa to Ward John and Merle Phillippe Hoffman.  On June 24, 1961 he married Carol Crist.

A graduate of Fremont High School and Iowa State University, Willis taught Vocational Ag for 34 years at Davis County High School, retiring in 1996.  He then worked for Performance Pipe, retiring in 2009.

Surviving is his wife Carol; his children, Colleen (Scott) Baird and Brian Hoffman both of Ottumwa, Douglas Hoffman of Round Lake, IL; two grandchildren, Kimberlee Baird and Justin Baird and a great-grandson, Emmett Ayala.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Jeremy Skinner officiating.  Burial will be in the Floris Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
