Carol Hope Brown, 96, of Fairfield, formerly of Batavia passed away Sunday March 18, 2018, at Sunnybrook Living Care Center in Fairfield.   Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Joe Smith

Joe Smith, 94, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Beacon, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 18, 2018, at the Oskaloosa Care Center.

Walter Joe Smith, son of James Walter and Merle Amy (Chiles) Smith, was born October 15, 1923, in Des Moines, Iowa.  He attended Des Moines schools, and his first job was with Firestone Tire Company. He met a young Oskaloosa gal, Nellie “Naydene” Perkins, who was attending high school in Des Moines. They married October 15, 1944, at the rural home of her parents, near Beacon, Iowa.  They remained in Des Moines until after their first son was born, and then moved to Beacon to be closer to Naydene’s family. Joe was employed by Lytle Motors and later at Thayer Chevrolet as a mechanic. After an attempt to unionize employees failed, Joe went to work for Clow Valve  August 15, 1955. Joe worked at Clow for 31 years, first in the machine shop and later in maintenance; he retired April 1, 1986.

Joe had many enjoyable years of retirement.  He and Naydene owned a 5th wheel, and they spent many months of each year at Branson, Missouri and exploring much of the country.  Joe also spent many hours in his woodworking shop, crafting gifts for grandchildren and others. Joe attended the First Baptist Church in Oskaloosa and later the Beacon United Methodist Church.  

His family includes his children and their spouses: Joe and Nancy Smith, Ted and Linda Smith and Cynthia and Ron Barrett, all of Beacon; grandchildren: Jodi Smith of Washington State, Alicia Smith of Beacon, Melissa (Mark) Little of Oskaloosa, Justin (Heather) Smith of Beacon, Brandon (Wendi) Smith of New Sharon, and Eric (Michaela) Barrett of Leighton; great-grandchildren: Mark and Jeremy Jacobs, Katelyn and Jared Smith, Hayley Pinkerton, Nash Smith, Rayalin Russell, Morgan and Hali Barrett, MaKennah and Spencer Little; and great-great-grandson, Charlie Walter Jacobs.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Naydene; a grandson, Douglas Joe Smith; a brother, Elza Smith; and three sisters: Opal Meyers, Mary Ann Gamble, and Evelyn Pritchard.

Funeral Services for Joe will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 22, 2018, at Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Kevin Smith officiating.  Burial will be in Beacon Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon, Wednesday at the funeral chapel; the family will greet visitors from 5-7 p.m.  Memorials can be made to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Morris Leydens

Morris Leydens, 67, of Glenwood, Iowa passed away Thursday, March 15, 2017, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Morris Robert Leydens, son of Andrew and Doris (Hoover) Leydens was born May 3, 1950 in Iowa City, Iowa. When Morris was young he moved to Glenwood, Iowa. Morris very much enjoyed being in nature. He loved spending time outside and evaluating which trees needed trimmed and which trees needed to be taken down. He took great pride in how his home looked. He loved going for walks and spending time with friends. Morris worked for many years in laundry service, retiring in 2017. Morris was an avid fisherman and went fishing every chance he got. He loved a good catfish dinner.  Morris also enjoyed traveling each year to Camp Sunnyside, and the occasional trip to the Dude Ranch in Arkansas.

Morris was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Paul Leydens.

Morris will be deeply missed by all of his friends and his family in Glenwood.  He enjoyed spending visits with his special friends Kenny Jacobsen and Chris Atwood.

Funeral services for Morris will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at the Langkamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Jon Nelson officiating. Burial will be in the Old White Cemetery in Oskaloosa.  Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, at Langkamp Funeral Chapel.  Memorials may be made to Camp Sunnyside.  Langkamp Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.  Memories and condolences can be sent by visiting langkampfuneralchapel.com.

Alice B. Garr, 94, of Ottumwa, died at 12:21 a.m. March 20, 2018 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

She was born March 18, 1924 in Centerville, IA to Harvey and Minnie Buffington Parcel.  Alice married Myrl Garr on September 8, 1941 and he preceded her in death on December 5, 1991.

Alice was past President  and member of Walter B. Schafer Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, member of O.B. Nelson Unit #3 American Legion Auxiliary, Military Order of Cooties #16 Auxiliary, Pony Express Association and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #114 Auxiliary.

Surviving are her children, Rosa L. (Don) Morton of Eldorado, KS, Delbert M. (Bonnie) Garr and Larry J. (Pam) Garr both of Ottumwa; 28 grandchildren; 81 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Bankson of Apopka, FL and Rosa Barker of Aloha, OR; and beloved friend, Eunice Graham.

She was preceded in death by a son, Max Garr Sr.; 3 grandsons; 4 brothers, Carl, Sam, Bill and Jack Parcel; 4 sisters, Evelyn Robbins, Mildred Wolff, Violet Shinn and infant Opal Parcel.

Funeral services will be  1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Dan Smith officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Paul Madsen

Paul G. Madsen, 89, of Ottumwa, died at 1:17 a.m. March 22, 2018 at his home.

Paul was born February 3, 1929 in Kimballton, Iowa to Alfred and Laura Marcussen Madsen. He married Barbara McBride on September 3, 1951.  Paul graduated from Audubon High School in 1947 and the University of Iowa in 1951.  Paul played the snare drum all four years in the University of Iowa marching band.

Paul was a charter Life Underwriter.  He was a staff manager for Prudential Life Insurance Company, a General Agent for American Mutual Life, and partner in NOEL Insurance from which he retired in 1992.

Paul served on the board of the Ottumwa Regional Health Foundation when Pennsylvania Place was established.  Paul was president of the Ottumwa Area Development Corporation, St. Joseph Hospital board, Evening Kiwanis and SCORE.  Paul served on the Board of Directors of RSVP, Ottumwa Symphony and St. Joseph Health and Rehabilitation Center.  He also served on the Iowa Supreme Court Grievance Committee, the United Way Review committee, was Player Agent for the Midwest Little League and was very active in his church-St. Mary of the Visitation.  He was a member of the Wapello County Historical Society, Friends of the Library, the Civil War Round Table and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.  Paul and Barbara spent the winter months for 25 years in Destin, Florida.

Surviving is his wife Barbara; his children Mary Madsen (Bob Glancy) of Centennial, CO, Susan (Dave) Bolte of Des Moines, Nancy (Chuck) Manson of Ottumwa, and John (Stephanie) Madsen of Falmouth, MA; seven grandchildren Sarah Glancy of Makakilo, HI, Lisa (Will) Manson Vickery of Portland, OR, Stephen (fiancée Laura) Glancy of Yorktown, VA, Hanna Madsen of Washington, D.C., Chris Manson of Airdrie, AB, William Bolte of Madison, WI, and Mathea Madsen of Falmouth, MA.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Laura Ann, his sister Solvey (Emmett) Arneson and his mother-in-law Elizabeth McBride.

Funeral mass will 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Visitation with Father James Betzen C.PP.S. presiding.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home.   Family visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday with a Christian Wake service at 7 p.m. Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary of the Visitation or to the Paul G. Madsen Scholarship fund at Indian Hills Community College.

Frank Orman

Francis Eugene “Frank” Orman, 97, of Ottumwa, died at 6:50 p.m. March 22, 2018 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

He was born November 24, 1920 in Lockridge, IA to John Joseph and Lola Belle Erikson Orman.  He married Phyllis McCurdy on December 6, 1945 and she preceded him in death on October 10, 2012.

He was a 1939 graduate of Ottumwa High School. Frank enlisted in the US Navy on October 4, 1939.  He initially served on the USS Honolulu, being on board during the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack.  He also served aboard the USS Iowa and USS Wisconsin.

After leaving the Navy Frank worked in the Wapello county surveying department before joining the Ottumwa Fire Department in 1952.  In his 25 year career with the Department he served at all three stations in Ottumwa and retired at the rank of Captain.

He has been an avid and very successful fisherman his entire life, having had the opportunity to fish throughout the Midwest and Florida.

He was a member of Willard St. United Methodist Church, O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion, a life member of Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member of Disabled American Veterans.

Surviving is his son, Dr. Bruce (Laura Beckwith) Orman of Ankeny; 2 sisters, Connie (Bob) Baker of Ottumwa and Jan (Mac) Klemp of Tampa, FL; a sister-in-law, Frances Brown of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by  his parents and a brother, Kenneth Orman.

His body has been cremated.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with  Rev. Leila Disburg officiating. Honors will be performed by the Ottumwa Fire Department Honor Guard.

Inurnment will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans.

Treva Greiner

Treva Rebecca Greiner, 89, of Fairfield, IA passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at the Sunnybrook Living Care Center in Fairfield.  As were her wishes her body was cremated.  Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 2, 2018 at the Cranston Family Funeral Home in Fairfield, IA.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Danny Cary officiating. Burial will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Treva’s honor be directed to the Fairfield Community School District to be used for the school bus GPS tracking project or the Senior Meals on Wheels Program.  Friends may sign the online guestbook at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com.  Cranston Family Funeral Home of Fairfield is assisting the family with arrangements for 89 year old, Treva Greiner.

Rebeckah Murray

Rebeckah Sue Murray, 59, of Kirkville, died at 4:36 p.m. March 24, 2018 at her home.

She was born July 10, 1958 in Ottumwa to Earl Clarence and Mildred Mass Mooney.  She married David Murray, Jr. on November 24, 1975.

A resident of Ottumwa most of her life, Rebeckah graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1976.  She had worked as a machinist for Rockwell in Fairfield for more than 20 years.

She enjoyed spending time with family and displayed her artistic talents by painting murals.

She is survived by her husband, David; two sons, Dustin Murray of Newton and Dave Murray of Hedrick; three grandchildren, Lilac, Daphne and Vaughn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two half sisters, Pam Ruckman and Carolyn Bailey.

Her body has been cremated.

Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heartland Humane Society,  P.O. Box 1149, Ottumwa, IA 52501.

Aaron Fuller

Aaron Matthew “Scooter” Fuller, 43, of Ottumwa died at 12:35 a.m. March 23, 2018 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

He was born August 13, 1974 in Ottumwa, IA to George Raymond and Diana Davis Fuller.

A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1992, he attended Indian Hills Community College.  He worked at Creative Edge in Fairfield and at Menards.

Aaron loved to draw, play video games and listen to music.  He was a Harley Davidson fan.  He enjoyed watching football, especially the Steelers and spending time at the gun range.  He collected coins, football and Star War figurines. Spring breaks were spent traveling with his kids.  Aaron had a great sense of humor and loved his puppy, Chewy.

Surviving are his children, Bethany Fuller of Jackson, MI, Steffen and Gabriel Fuller both of Ottumwa; his mother, Diana Fuller and a special friend, Eleanor Arnold; a brother, Sean Eric Fuller; a sister, Cynthia Leigh Bitner; a half brother, George A. Fuller and a half sister, Rebecca Fuller.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating.  Cremation will follow services.

Visitation begins after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the family present from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to the family for his children.

Maximus Michael Hager, son of Joseph and Alexis Hager was stillborn March 22, 2018 at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

Surviving are his parents, Joseph Michael and Alexis Ann Hager; grandparents, Niya and Phil Cross, Michael Berrier and Debbie Berrier; siblings, Mariah and Brianne Hager; aunts and uncles, Mica (Justin) Klodt, Martin (Tami) Hager, Venessa Hager, Rebecca Hager, Brian (Kinzy) Hager and Erik Cross; along with many cousins.

He was preceded in death by great grandparents James and Joyce Vaughan, Frank and Pearl Hager, Robert and Katie Overmyer, Mary Ann and Henry Berrier.

Memorial services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Shane Frazier officiating.

Joyce Goodvin

Joyce G. Goodvin, 85, of Ottumwa, died at 9:16 a.m. March 25, 2018 at Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.

She was born on December 26, 1932 in Kentucky to Ira and Adeline Duncan.  She married Owen Tex Goodvin in 1950 and they later divorced.  She married Jack Woollums and they later divorced.

She worked at Chamberlain Mfg. and Excel.  Joyce loved bowling, working in the yard, her pets, crocheting, knitting, dancing, Elvis, Mel Gibson and watching the Golden Girls.  She loved spending time with her family and helping raise grandchildren and many others.

Surviving are two sons, Gary (Diana) Goodvin of Alliance, NE and Wayne Goodvin of Ottumwa; a daughter, Debbie Goodvin of Ottumwa; two step-children, Brenda Woollums and Tom Woollums; 10 grandchildren; 7  great- grandchildren; a sister Louise Williams  of Florida, Dorothy Brasher of Madisonville, KY; Delcie  Mills of Ottumwa and a brother, Ray Duncan of Madisonville, KY.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her adopted parents, Carlos and Clara DeBello;  three brothers, Art, Herb and Frank Duncan and a step-son, Jeff Woollums.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Craig Zuithoff officiating.  Cremation will follow the services.  Inurnment will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Heartland Humane Society.

Christina Chrisman

Christina M. Chrisman, 94, of Johnston and formerly of Blakesburg, died at 6:44 p.m. March 24, 2018 at Methodist West Hospital in West Des Moines.

She was born August 20, 1923 in Blakesburg, IA to John and Ethel Drake Herteen.  She married Max Chrisman April 19, 1944.  He preceded her in death January 16, 2015.

A resident of rural Blakesburg most of her life, she and her husband farmed for 44 years.

She was a member of the Ottumwa Baptist Temple, the American Quilting Society and other local quilting clubs. She enjoyed attending Bible study and a quilting group at the Christiansburg United Methodist Church.   She was a 4-H leader and Girl Scouts leader.  She loved traveling the world with her husband.

Surviving are her children, Beverly (Delbert) Billings of Vadnais Heights, MN, Kay (Eldon) Strange of Urbandale, Judy King of Johnston and Dennis (Wendy) Chrisman of West Des Moines; eight grandchildren, Leah (Darrell) Quam of Broomfield, CO, Amy (Chris) Boettcher of Maple Grove, MN, Sandy (Brian) Schueller of Waukee, Michael (Marcia) Strange of Marshall, MI, Nancy (Michael) Olson of Grimes,  Jennifer (Nick) Adams of Ames, Toni (Derek) Retherford of Urbandale and Emily (Michael) Bialas of West Des Moines; eleven great- grandchildren, Ali and Gavin, Addisyn and Alexa, Andrew and Dylan, Braden, Ellie and Brooks, Maxwell and Madelyn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Angeline Rudd; a brother, and sister-in-law, Dean and Irene Herteen; and a son-in-law, Stephen King.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Travis Decker officiating.  Burial will be in Blakesburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be open after 1 p.m. Tuesday with the family present one hour prior to the service on Wednesday to greet friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Blakesburg Cemetery.

Juanita Pearl Stookesberry, 78, of Ottumwa, died at 8:40 p.m. March 26, 2018 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

She was born May 23, 1939 in Iowa City to Ira and Goldie Cecil Porter.  She married James Alva Stookesberry on December 31, 1956 in Lancaster, MO.

A resident of rural Ottumwa most of her life, she and her husband owned and operated Stookesberry Warehouse.

Juanita was a member of the Davis Street Christian Church and the Rose Chapter #552 Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and mushroom hunting, but her number one love was spending time with her family.

Surviving are her husband, Jim; her children, Christina Carnahan of Ottumwa, Glenna (King) Block of Sparta, MO and Tim (Mike Dvorchak) Stookesberry of New York, NY; four grandchildren, James (Brittany) Carnahan of Ottumwa, King Boone (Leah) Block, II of Ozark, MO, Stacey (Andrew) Woodward of Ottumwa and Samuel (Landyn) Block of Springfield, MO; seven great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Lilah and Cruise Carnahan, Augusta Warren, Adaline Woodard, King Boone Block III and Cooper Block; her siblings, Jerry Porter, Cindy (Mike) Paddock, John (Mona) Porter, Mick (Pam) Porter; a brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Theda Stookesberry.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Angela Carnahan; 2 sisters Lou Ann Porter, Naomi Chernotsky a brother, Rick Porter and her mother and father-in law, Alva and Esther Stookesberry.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. James H. Wakelin officiating.  Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Davis Street Christian Church or Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello County.

Don Schwartz

Donald P. Schwartz, 65, of Ottumwa, died at 2:53 p.m. March 27, 2018 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

He was born August 16, 1952 in Ottumwa to James and Patricia Colbert Schwartz.  He married Rebecca Bonney on July 5,  1980.

Don was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam Conflict.  He was a graduate of Indian Hills School of Nursing. Don worked as an  emergency medical technician at Wapello County Ambulance  and at St. Joseph’s Hospital.  He was also associated with his family in the operation of Hotel Ottumwa.

He was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation,  Knights of Columbus Council #888, a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus General McMullen Assembly and was a former Boy Scout Leader.

Surviving is his wife, Becky; his children, Thomas Schwartz of Des Moines, Jennifer Schwartz of Ottumwa and Nicholas Schwartz of Chicago, IL; 3 grandchildren, Jordan Lappinen, Delainey Schwartz and Grayson Schwartz; three brothers, Nicholas (Joyce) Schwartz of Omaha, NE, Michael (Lety) Schwartz and Timothy Schwartz (Fred Zesiger) both of Ottumwa; two sisters, Kay (Larry) Whittington of Farson and Joan Schwartz of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William Schwartz.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of the Visitation with Father Jim Betzen C.PP.S. presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials may be made to Seton Catholic School or Chief Wapello Trail.

Donna Saner

Donna Louise Saner, 68, of Ottumwa, died April 1, 2018 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

She was born July 17, 1949 in Ottumwa to John and Rose Fuller Bartell.  She married Mike Henderson and they divorced.  She married Pete Saner Sr. on November 5, 1993 and he preceded her in death on July 16, 1997.

A 1967 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Donna had worked at the Ottumwa Country Club, Kmart and had been assistant manager at Fisherman’s Bay restaurant.  She retired from working at Cargill Meat Solutions.

Donna loved fishing, playing bingo and visiting the casino.

Surviving are her children, Tracy (Jim) Greer and Troy Henderson (Heather Ingles) both of Ottumwa; 3 grandchildren, Jake Wheaton, Jimmy Greer and Rhianne Cartwright; 3 great-grandchildren, Kayden Michael Carroll, Ezra and Kamdyn Cartwright; 5 sisters, Delores Skinner, Mondie (Jeff) Raske and Jeannie Heemsbergen all of Ottumwa, Joyce (Bud) Plies of Davenport and Linda (Leonard) Coble of Hedrick; and best friend, JoAnn Walker.

She was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Martha “Marty” Jacobson and Norma Ruby and a nephew, Clint Leedom.

Her body has been cremated.

A time for friends to greet family will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Earl Eugene Stocker, 87, of Carlisle, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 12:05 a.m. April 1, 2018 at Carlisle Center for Wellness & Rehabilitation.

He was born November 16, 1930 in Ottumwa to Eugene and Fern Wheaton Stocker.  He married Bonnie L. Smith on December 3, 1951.

Earl was a graduate of Ottumwa High School and Northeast Missouri State College.  He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.

Earl was a machinist and plant supervisor.

He was a member of the Eddyville Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M.

Surviving is his wife, Bonnie; his children, Cathie (David) Yakum of Des Moines, Cindy (Jim) Lasky of Liberty, MO, Phillip Earl Stocker of Simi Valley CA, 7 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and a brother, Glenn Stocker of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter and a brother, Richard Stocker.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor  Jon Disburg officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Kindred Hospice, 5399 Chimra Rd., Panora, IA 50216
