  DWAINE DIMMITT

OTTUMWA-Dwaine Dale Dimmitt, 74, of 700 W. Alta Vista, passed away at 4:10 p.m. March 20, 2017 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

He was born October 1, 1942 in Ottumwa to Paul and Velma Sparks Dimmitt.  He married Linda Fuhs on February 23, 1963.

A 1960 graduate of Eddyville High School, he had lived in Ottumwa except from 1980 to 2012  when  he worked for Swiss Colony, in Monroe, WI retiring as plant engineer in 2001.

He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ottumwa.

He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and spending time with family and friends.

Surviving is his wife, Linda; three daughters, Terrie (Dennis) Bryant of Udell, Barbara (Ron) Logston of Cincinnati, IA and Rebecca (Jeff) Hornback of Highland Center; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and one on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Patrick Hilgendorf presiding.  Cremation will follow the services.  Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to Izaak Walton League or Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties, 927 Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa, IA 52501

James Allen “Tooter” Cochran, age 61 of Moravia, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at his home.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00AM, Saturday March 25, 2017 at the Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene in Moravia with Pastor Terry Chapman officiating.  An open visitation will be held after the service at approximately 12:00PM, Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene in Moravia.  Memorials have been established to the family of James “Tooter” Cochran, and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.  Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com.

OTTUMWA-Ruth  Maxine Moureau Christy, 89, of Carlisle, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 10:30 p.m. March 20, 2017 at the Carlisle Care Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Barbara Newman, Phyllis Flammia and Shirley Dusing; husbands, Richard Moureau and Raymond Christy and stillborn twins, Sharon and Karen Moureau.

Her body has been cremated.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Roger Hemmings officiating.

JERRY BRIDE

OTTUMWA-Jerry Richard Bride, 76, of Ottumwa, died at 9:41 p.m. March 23, 2017 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

The son of Donald and Bessie Worth Bride, Jerry was born July 12, 1940 in Ottumwa.  He married Eleanor Coble in June 1962 and they later divorced.  He married Kay Williams on May 3, 1975 in Greentop, MO.

A resident of Ottumwa most of his life, Jerry served with the U.S. Army.  He was a truck driver for Purolator, and had worked for J&K Grocery and Grandpa’s Craft & Supplies.

He was a member of the Pony Express of Iowa and had served on their state board, also a member of Drifters Car Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #114 and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.  Jerry had been a volunteer for the American Red Cross for 10 years.

Surviving is his wife, Kay; three daughters, Monica Bride and Julie Gardner-Wisse both of Oskaloosa, Pamela (Arlen) Anderson of Albia; step-children, Connie (Randy) Crow of Hedrick, Julie (Randy) Vannoy of Farson and Randy (Kim) Williams of Moravia; 16 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; a sister, Patty  Fort of Bloomfield; and a nephew, Jeff (Tracy) Fort of Pella.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie Dixon and Donald Bride and brother-in-law, Raymond Fort.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor  Garry Shepherd officiating.  Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Visitation begins at  1 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

OTTUMWA-Sayla  D. Lane, 2 month old daughter of Amy Lane of 418 N. Weller, died at 4:57 p.m. March 26, 2017 at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City.

She was born January 9, 2017 in Iowa City.

Surviving is her mother, Amy; siblings Sophie and Sullivan; grandmother, Tammy Lane; grandfather, Christopher Lane; aunt, Jennifer Hughes; uncle, Aaron Lane; great-grandparents, Paul (Dixie) Lane and Sharon Lane; adopted grandmother, Brenda Anderson; cousin, Makhenna; great-uncle, Lester Otis (Sandy) Jordan Jr. and many friends, extended family and supporters.

She was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Dorothy Jordan and Lester Otis Jordan; and great-aunt, Tonjya Jordan.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

JOSEPH McKELVEY

OTTUMWA-Joseph F. McKelvey, 92, of Ottumwa died at 6:30 p.m. March 26, 2017 at the Regency Care Center in Norwalk.

He was born March 1, 1925 in Ottumwa to Joseph F. and Frances Elizabeth Windle McKelvey.  He married Patricia Ann McCoy on September 24, 1943 and she preceded him in death on March 27, 2008.

Joseph was a World War II veteran having served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific.

He worked for 30 years at John Deere Ottumwa Works, retiring from the experimental department in 1976.

He was a member of Davis St. Christian Church and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Surviving is his daughter, Linda S. Horner of West Des Moines; two granddaughters, Lori (David) Melz and Amy (Brad) Davidson both of West Des Moines; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Don McKelvey of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Bill, Bob, Jack and Dick McKelvey.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor James H. Wakelin officiating.  Burial will be in Chisman Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Davis St. Christian Church.

SHIRLEY LUKE

OTTUMWA-Shirley A. Luke, 86, of Ottumwa, died at 6:57 p.m. March 27, 2017 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

She was born January 14, 1931 in Ottumwa to Francis L. and Jennie Snook Utterback. She married Cyrus William Aalbers and he preceded her in death in 1952. She married Charles Norman Luke on September 11, 1954 and he preceded her in death on February 14, 2011.

A 1948 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Shirley had been an Ottumwa resident all of her life.  She worked for 21 years at Union Bank & Trust Co., retiring in 1991.

She was a member of First Christian Church.  She enjoyed in participating in 2 sewing groups and playing Bunco.

Surviving are her two sons, Gregory A. (June) Aalbers of Kirkville and Aaron L. (Sheryl) Luke of Ottumwa; 12 grandchildren;  35 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Zeeta (Dwight) Kessel of Washington, IA, Keeta (Chuck) Schrepfer of Perry, AR and Frank Luke of Ottumwa.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in McCormick Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Thursday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

OTTUMWA-Lisa L. Stufflebeem, 47, of Ottumwa died at 2:34 p.m. March 28, 2017 at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield from injuries sustained in an auto accident on Hwy 34 near Fairfield.

She was born April 21, 1969 in Galesburg, IL to Carl and Ida Jones Stufflebeem.

Lisa had been a caregiver in a nursing home.

Surviving are three children, Krista Stufflebeem of Fremont, Kristina Stufflebeem of Montrose, CO and T.J. (Amber) Stambaugh of Abingdon, IL; 8 grandchildren; her father, Carl Stufflebeem of Ottumwa; four sisters, Crystal Stufflebeem of Ottumwa, Carla Stanley of Monmouth, IL, June Ann Pedersen of Oquawka, IL, Tina Stufflebeem of Ottumwa; a brother, Curtis Stufflebeem of Monmouth, IL; and her companion, John Wong and his family of Galesburg, IL.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ida Jo Pedersen and an infant brother, James Dean Stufflebeem.

Her body has been cremated.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Thomas Smith officiating. Inurnment will be in the Oquawka Cemetery in Oquawka, Illinois.

OTTUMWA-Debra Lynn Dowd, 61, of Ottumwa died at 7:04 p.m. March 28, 2017 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

She was born January 6, 1956 in Ottumwa to Ralph H. and Donna Jean Cox Owen Jr.  She married James S. Dowd on June 23, 1984 and he preceded her in death on April 2, 2016.

A 1974 graduate of Blakesburg High School, she had worked at Hormel for a short time and since 1988 she had worked in the kitchen at Hy-Vee north and south stores.

Debra enjoyed painting,    helping with the Blakesburg Antique Air Show  and spending time with her kids and grandkids.

Surviving are two sons, Ryan (Katie) Dowd of Rochester, MN and Tyler (Brittany) Dowd of Ottumwa; a daughter, Traci (Chad) Thompson of Clive; 6 grandchildren, Dominic, Michael, Nora, James, Kenzie and Kayla; two brothers, Ralph P. (Linda) Owen and Randy H. Owen both of Ottumwa; her mother-in-law, Betty Dowd and sister-in-law, Arlene Dowd both of Cainsville, MO.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Lucy Dowd.

Her body has been cremated.

Family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home.  Private inurnment will be in Shaul Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be given to Wapello County 4-H.

OTTUMWA-Robert O. Sholes, 80, of Ottumwa, died March 28, 2017 at Oakwood Specialty Care in Albia.

He was born March 14, 1937 in Wapello County, IA to Lester Orin and Hazel Gertrude Young Sholes.  He married Sandra LeAnn Streeby and they later divorced.

A graduate of Eddyville High School, Robert had been a mechanic for Ackerman Motors and Superior Motors.  He worked in logging and tree trimming.

Surviving are three sons, Mark Sholes and John Sholes both of Ottumwa, Tom Sholes of Jefferson City, MO; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lester and Joseph Sholes; and three sisters, Margaret Darrah, Donna Sholes and Katherine Gray.

Graveside services and burial will be 4 p.m. Friday at Shaul Cemetery with Pastor Dan Smith of Care Initiatives Hospice officiating.

Visitation with the family present will be 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home.

Donald Vannoy

DONALD VANNOY

Douds

Donald C. Vannoy, 89, of Douds died at 2:52 A.M. Friday March 17, 2017 at Keosauqua Health Care Center. He was born May 28, 1927 near Troy to Charles and Beulah Miller Vannoy.  Don graduated from Pulaski High School and married Betty J. Breckenridge December 31, 1950 in Milton Methodist Church.  She died January 27, 2016.  Don and Betty lived near Cantril until moving to Douds in 1963.  He was employed by Van Buren County Highway Department as a machine operator and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a Military Policeman in Germany.

Don and Betty were active members of Christ United Methodist Church, Douds and with their family served many years as church custodians.  He was an active member and Past Commander of John Hyson Reneker Post No. 494. American Legion and long-time member and Past Master of Celestial Lodge No. 413, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons both in Douds and served many years as lodge secretary.  He was also a member of Douds Saddle Club, active in Douds Field Day and former Starlight Lodge No. 350 Knights of Pythias.

Surviving are two sons, Doug Vannoy of Ft. Smith, AR and Doyle Vannoy of Douds, a daughter, Becky Vannoy of Douds, 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, a sister, Marie Willier of Pulaski, other relatives and many friends.  In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Clinton Vannoy.

Don’s body has been cremated.  A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A. M.  Saturday April 8, 2017 at Christ United Methodist Church, Douds with Pastor Elizabeth Bell and Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating.  Visitation will open at 3P.M. Friday April 7 at Pedrick Funeral Home, Douds with family present 5-7 P.M.  Masonic Rites by Celestial Lodge will follow the visitation.  Burial of cremains will be in Leando Cemetery following the service at the church with military honors by John Hyson Reneker Post.  Memorials to Christ United Methodist Church or Leando Cemetery may be left at the funeral home or church or mailed to the family at 14896 Ferris Street, Douds, IA 52551

OTTUMWA – Robert Alan VanBlaricome, 51, of Eaton, CO, formerly of Ottumwa died April 1, 2017 at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, CO.
He was born October 8, 1965 in Fairfield, IA to Roy and Joan Miller VanBlaricome. He married Brenda Skinner on December 27, 1990 and they later divorced.
A 1984 graduate of Cardinal High School, Robert had worked as a utility locator for Stake Center Locating. He had also worked for Meadow Gold Dairy, owned Dillards Grocery & Grill, had worked at Excel and was co-owner of Roy’s Steak House & Lounge. Robert served as a union steward at Excel and was very active with UFCW Local 230.
He faithfully donated each month to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Robert enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing, hunting, going to the mountains with family and anything outdoors with his grandson, kids, family and friends.
Surviving are two daughters, Krista VanBlaricome of Eaton, CO and Kayla VanBlaricome of Blakesburg; a grandson, William Roche of Eaton, CO; his mother, Joan VanBlaricome of Batavia; two brothers, Royce VanBlaricome of Granite Falls, WA and Randy VanBlaricome of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roy VanBlaricome.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Jeremy Skinner officiating.  Cremation will follow the services.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

EDDIE GENOCHIO

OTTUMWA-Edward Wade “Eddie” Genochio, 51, of Ottumwa, passed at 4:10 p.m. April 5, 2017 at Ridgewood Specialty Care from pneumonia related complications..

Eddie was born April 6, 1965 in Ottumwa to Edward P. and Sherry Johnson Genochio.

A lifelong citizen of Ottumwa, Eddie graduated from the Ottumwa High School Special Education Program in 1985 and worked at Tenco Industries through his supervised living at Crest Services.  He was with Crest and Tenco until 2016 when his health forced a move to Ridgewood Specialty Care.

Having a fearless sense of adventure in his younger days, Eddie mastered the Ottumwa public transit system and traveled the city by bus, making friends throughout the town.  He deeply loved music of all kinds ranging from The Ramones to Hank Williams, from Christmas carols to Bob Seger, from The Beach Boys to religious hymns, knowing the words to every song.

He attended the Church of the Brethren and enjoyed weekly church services and attended without fail until his health prevented it.

Eddie was blessed with many friends and protectors from all walks of life on his journey.

Eddie is survived by his father and step-mother Edward P. and Jeannette Genochio of Ottumwa; his mother and step-father Sherry and Kenny  Campbell of Ottumwa; two brothers, Jerry J.  and his wife Dawnnie Merado-Genochio of Kansas City, MO and Kelly D. Genochio of Pasadena, CA; two nieces, Tiffany Miller of Cedar Rapids and Viola Pete Genochio of Kansas City, MO

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with  Pastor Dennis Doud officiating.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Monday with the family present from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to Crest Services,  226 W. Main St. #402, Ottumwa, IA 52501.

Sister Mary Kevin Bissell, CHM, Ph.D./Kathryn Bissell

OTTUMWA – Kathryn A. Bissell, known in religion as Sister Mary Kevin, was born November 26, 1926 to George S. and Anna O’Connor Bissell in Wapello County near Ottumwa, Iowa.  She graduated from Ottumwa Heights College in 1945.  She attended St. Ambrose University and graduated with a BA degree from Marycrest College, Davenport, Iowa.

She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Humility in 1950 and was professed in 1953.  She then began an extensive career of teaching; through several decades she taught all subjects except music, commercial courses and modern languages.   She instructed in all grades from kindergarten through post-doctoral work.  In Iowa schools she taught in Ottumwa, Pleasant Plain, Monroe, Wapello, Centerville, Marshalltown, Des Moines, Dunlap and Neola.  She taught in Sidney and Great Falls, Montana, and in Kotzebue, Alaska.

Sister Kevin attended the University of Iowa, University of Wisconsin, University of Alaska, in College, Alaska, Loyola of Chicago, Virginia State in Norfolk, American University, Washington, DC, and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  She held undergraduate majors in five fields, two master’s degrees and a doctorate in four fields.

Her final teaching position was at Howard University Graduate School, Washington, DC, where she taught research methodology and served as the Director of Graduate Research.  In the Washington, DC area, she worked extensively as an international development methodologist.

Sister Kevin did community development work among the Eskimo communities for the Diocese of Northern Alaska, working in Fairbanks, Bethel, Point Barrow, Hooper Bay and Kotzebue.  She returned from Alaska to become the Director of Research for the Latin American Bureau of the U.S. Catholic Conference in Davenport, Iowa, moving shortly thereafter to become National Director of Research, Division for Latin America, US Catholic Conference Headquarters in Washington, DC.  With Sister Caridad Inda she designed and presented courses on Vatican II to the women religious of the five dioceses of Southern Mexico.

While working in the Washington DC area from 1975 to 1997, Sister Kevin also designed and implemented large scale international research projects for the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, The Justice and Defense Departments and the Agency for International Development, Department of State, Pacific Consultants, Inc., Ideamatics, Inc. and the Institute for Urban Affairs.  These included international-level development projects in Jamaica, Mauritania, Tanzania, Morocco and in the US such national projects and research as “The Incidence and Prevalence of Vector-Born Diseases in US Migrant Camps,” “The Financial Impact of Third-Party Payment on Drug Costs for HEW,” “ The Data Collection, Storage and Analysis Model for the Department of Energy at its Creation for DOE,” “The Mortality Rates for Military Actions Other than War (MOTWS)” for the Marine Corps, and “The Impact on US Engineering Schools of the Training Needs Generated by the National Rural Potable Water Act” for the US Congress.  She also designed and chaired the International Women in Development Conference in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and designed the International Conference of Women Scientists in Vienna, Austria for the United Nations.

Sister Kevin served as Assistant Commissioner to the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), John Ahearne, also as Assistant to Commissioner James Asselstine.  In addition, she worked in the NRC Research Department in Probabilistic Risk Assessment and was the liaison for Commission-Level Correspondence at the Secretariat of the NRC.  She was awarded the Mary Pinkerton Award, the highest national service award for federally-employed women.

Sister Kevin was a charter member of the Christian Feminists of Washington, DC and served on the Boards of Wider Opportunities for Women and The Housing Counseling Service, Washington Chapters.  She was a long time member of the NOW Board and of the National Coalition of American Nuns, for which she once served as president.  At the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, she also served as President of the NRC Women’s Association.  She was a long-time member of the American Political Science Association, International Studies Association, Women in Development and the PAX Community Organization, a liturgical experimental group of St. Luke’s Parish, McLean, Virginia in the Diocese of Arlington.  She served the PAX community in many leadership roles.

In 1982, with Sister Caridad Inda, she designed and founded The Center for International Resources (CIRIMEX) in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.  CIRIMEX principally provides one-on-one, total immersion Spanish language and culture training for Church and Religious personnel, seminarians, diocesan and order priests, and prelates nationwide and from 26 foreign countries.  Sister Kevin has served as the USA Director from its founding.

Sister Kevin was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers Tim, Marion (Pat) and Ted. She is survived by her sister, Mary Pester of Ottumwa, her long time business partner, Sr. Caridad Inda, ten nieces and nephews, Francia Pester of Ottumwa, Cheryl (Jon) Simplot of Ottumwa, Marti (Jerry) Fuller of Oskaloosa, Michael (Dawn) Bissell of Knoxville, TN, Terri (Ron) Rusek of  Zion, IL, Julie (Mike) Kelso of Des Moines, David (Linda) Bissell of Agency, Kevin (Lisa) Pester of Ottumwa, Trish (John McNulty) Bissell of Crestwood, KY and Chris (Joe) Munley of Ottumwa; a sister-in-law, Joan Bissell; seventeen grand-nieces and nephews and twenty-one great-grand-nieces and nephews, as well as the Sisters and Associates of her religious community.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa.  A Christian Wake Service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home followed by a time with the family present until 8 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Visitation in Ottumwa with Fr. James Betzen CPPS presiding.  Her body will be cremated following the services.    Inurnment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Congregation of the Humility of Mary, 820 W. Central Park Avenue, Davenport, IA 52804.

SANDY MORROW

OTTUMWA – Sandra Marie Morrow, 29, of 155 N. Ward St. died March 29, 2017 from injuries sustained in an auto accident on Hwy 21 south of Dysart.

She was born August 31, 1987 in Missouri, the daughter of Derrel and Mary Lucinda Follman Clubb.

Having grown up in Missouri, Sandy moved to Ottumwa and graduated from Ottumwa High School in 2006.  She had worked with ResCare and for Hardees.

She enjoyed working with little kids, riding roller coasters, bungee jumping and swimming.

Surviving is her father, Derrel Clubb of Edinburg, TX; her grandmother, Mildred Clubb of Delta; a sister, Nora Hibdon of Missouri; her boyfriend, Eric Morrow of Ottumwa, a nephew whom she helped raise, J.J. Morrow.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Smith officiating.  Cremation will follow the services.  Inurnment will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery west of Sigourney.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to the American Home Finding Association.

KAY HUSTON

OTTUMWA-Linda Kay Huston, 76, of Des Moines, formerly of Ottumwa, passed away April 2, 2017 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines after a battle with cancer.

Kay was a devoted wife and loving mother of four, and had a lifelong passion for tennis, the arts and volunteering.

She was born on November 20, 1940 in Kansas City, KS and lived in Shreveport, LA and Oklahoma City, OK before moving to Ottumwa in 1956. Kay was a 1958 graduate of Ottumwa High School and attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, MO before graduating from the University of Iowa in 1962.

On August 13, 1962 she married Bernard K. Huston.  Kay was a homemaker and was active in her community. She was a member of several clubs and organizations, including Irving Club (past president), Ottumwa Art Club (past president), Ottumwa Area Arts Council (past president), Ottumwa Public Library Board (past vice president and treasurer) and the Ottumwa Book Club. She was also a volunteer for Hospice Serving Davis & Wapello Counties.  Kay was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church in Ottumwa and St. Ambrose Cathedral parish in Des Moines.

She is survived by her husband; four children, Barry Huston of Oak Park, IL, Kathy (Gregg) Owens of Spirit Lake, Joe (Kristen) Huston of Monterey, CA and John (Cynthia) Huston

of Chicago, IL; and five grandchildren, Maureen Owens,  Rebecca Owens, Thomas Huston, Anna Huston and Clark Huston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin H. and Mary Alice Prather Kutnink, and a younger brother, Mark A. Kutnink.

Her body has been cremated.

Memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday April 10, 2017 at St. Mary of the Visitation in Ottumwa with Father James Betzen CPPS presiding.  Inurnment will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.

A Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday April 11, 2017 at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines with Father John Bertogli presiding.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kavanagh House in Des Moines, 900 56th St. Des Moines, IA 50312 or Hospice Serving Davis & Wapello Counties, 927 Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa, IA 52501.

ROBERT SPILMAN

HEDRICK – Robert E. Spilman, 90, of Hedrick died at March 31, 2017 at his home in Hedrick.

He was born October 31, 1926 in Farson, IA to James and Novenda Molesworth Spilman.  He married Norma J. Harkins on April 27, 1957.  She preceded him in death on October 23, 1996.

A graduate of Farson High School in 1944, he served in the U.S. Army during WW II with the 13th Engineer 7th Division in Korea.

He and his wife owned and operated Spilman’s Drive-in Restaurant from 1965-78.  He worked at Ideal Ready Mix 27 years, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of Hedrick Christian Church where he served on the board and as an Elder. He was a 70 year member and past commander of Arendt-Bowlin-Stubbs Post #83 American Legion where he served on the firing squad and a member of Walter B. Schafer Post #775 of Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He was a member and past master of Garfield Masonic Lodge #485 of Hedrick and presently a member of Justice Masonic Lodge #230 of Ollie and member of Davenport Consistory.

Bob served on the Hedrick City Council and as mayor of Hedrick.   He served with the Hedrick Volunteer Fire Dept, worked with Boy Scouts and Little League Baseball.

Surviving are a son, Michael E. (Ann) Spilman of Hedrick; two daughters, Vicki (Ron) Ebelsheiser of Casa Grande, AZ and Roxanne (Ed) Mosbey of Hedrick; a son-in-law, Ross Breon of Hedrick; 14 grandchildren; 28 great- grandchildren and 10 great- great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death his parents; a daughter, Janice Breon; a granddaughter, Brenda Ebelsheiser and a sister, Ruth Spilman.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastors Bill Hornback and John Lewis officiating.  Burial will be in Brooks Cemetery of Hedrick.

Visitation begins after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.  A Masonic service will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday followed by family visitation until 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Arendt-Bowlin-Stubbs Post #83 American Legion, Hospice of Mahaska County or Hedrick Christian Church.

Mark Alden Baayen, 67, of Bloomfield, IA passed away Thursday, April 6, 2017 at his home.  As were Mark’s wishes, his body has been cremated.  A graveside service will be held in the Eldon Cemetery on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 2:00 p.m..  Memorial contributions in Mark’s honor may be directed to the American Gothic House (300 American Gothic St., Eldon, IA 52554) or the Heartland Humane Society (314 Fox Sauk Rd., Ottumwa, IA 52501).  Friends may sign the online guestbook at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com.
